Gene's Lex had that boss and sidekick/henchmen thing to provide humor

Smallville Lex had him being friends and feel betrayed that Clark was keeping some big secret from him while he opened up to Clark. It became resentment and grew. Lex also had his dad with him to build on that resentment because his dad liked Clark
 


Yes hats off to you mr Duane Johnson for your arrogance and big headedness ,aking everything about you. Thank you for your bone head decisions such as rehiring henry cavil behind Warner's back. Thank you for the rituals that you performed like holding viewing audiences hostage and passing babies In the isles. That baby passing was symbolic for the eventual rebirth of the dc franchise. And now because of your bungling we have the true shift in the hiersrchy of power that you failed to achieve
 
I'm sure the failure of the movie attributed to Gunn getting hired but I doubt it was solely the reason. DCU just wasn't doing good overall

Though interestingly enough MCU looks to be wobbling and the start of the new DCU looks good (though it's only the first film)
