Classic or Nah?

This album doesn't check off one of the the first boxes that makes an album a classic.

Classic - judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality.

This isn't a great sounding album in 2018 and it's far from the highest quality hip hop albums.

Everything said in this post is an opinion. Obviously a bunch of niggas have judged this album to be of the highest quality over a long period of time.

Honestly how can any of these Classic or Not threads be truly objective?

That's a deeper discussion that would need it's own thread.

There's lil niggas out here that think tekashi is a top 5 doa MC. In my opinion discussions like this should be reserved for people with a certain level of hip hop knowledge.

But this is all in fun, so I don't take it to heart. But instead of clowning the kid who has Tekashi in his top 5, I'd tried to educate, which is what i try to do here sometimes.

Can kwame brown be in someone's top 5 nba player goat list? Sure. Is he wrong for his opinion? Nah. But it's a dumb and ignorant opinion.

I hear ya, but how can the highest selling hip hop album out the South in 1997 not have an impact though?

The noun definition of classic:

noun
  1. 1.
a work of art of recognized and established value.
    "his books have become classics"
    synonyms: definitive example, model, epitome, paradigm, exemplar;

Ghetto D without a doubt has a recognized and established value as being a quintessential album in spearheading the Southern takeover in hip hop.

It checks off the sales/impact box. But high quality album?

Niggas be quick to dismiss an album for 1 skippable song. This shit is full of em. Keep the same energy.

Your low quality is a lot of niggas high quality.

High quality lyricism is something I personally love but I realize that the absence of it doesn't automatically disqualify a hip hop album from being a classic.

i could be swayed, but im not about to expend unnecessary energy trying to persuade someone that this is a classic album.

I still feel it can be a personal and regional classic and there's nothing wrong with that

So who decides if an album is a "regional" classic vice a "national" classic?

Radio play?
Sales?
Record labels?
MTV?
BET?
White people?

I'm confused. IMO a classic is a classic.

Yeah, even if you don't think Ghetto D is a classic, it damn sure wasn't regional.

First time I ever heard it was I was riding in the car w/ cousin in NY.

to me, this is kinda why i think we need to go one step further and instead of classic, call those albums iconic

With so much music being made, i think as time goes on, for whatever reasons, more and more albums are going to be considered classics, however, iconic status should be reserved for truly the elite

With that argument, i could easily make the case for Ghetto D as a classic, but its not an iconic album along the spectrum of hip hop.

I dont deny the impact of a single like Make em say Uggh, but there are going to be some people that just wont resonate with the album like the people from the region where the album originates from which is why i can definitely stamp this as a regional classic

I've also considered this, but decided that we shouldn't dilute the term classic because some albums we like won't make the cut.

IMO classic should be reserved for the best of the best

There is definitely a difference between classic and iconic.

To me it's a classic: My reason, it carved a whole new lane for that record company and P as a artist. After that album, him and his camp were taken serious by everybody in the industry. (looking at it from a business and cultural view)

Music wise: To me, at the time, the CD was played in every car, barbershop, club parking lot, car wash, etc.
Everybody had their own personal favorite song off the album, ppl like Make'em say Ugh, some liked Plan B, some like Bourbons and Lacs, some liked There they go. You had ppl liking different songs off the album, which gave the album diversity and range. Not everybody liked one song off that album.
From the skit when dude called into NL studios, to the cover of the CD.
