I am curious as to how he managed to survive all this time though. He was in poverty. He had a job that didn't pay well. Cost of living has risen steadily over the years, but he hasn't gotten a single raise. I don't even see how it's possible for him to be making it. Even if he lives a humble lifestyle. That humble lifestyle cost more now than it did 30 years ago, so how can he maintain it if he's not making more money?

I worked at the Original Pancake House in Southfield for just under a month doing the same shit, bussing tables.

Fuck that place. I had sense enough to get the fuck outta there. Walked off the job and never looked back.

but management don't give a fuck, they figure if the bae pay bullshit they'll leave and they'll find another person to take it...

but some people like the places they do that for....

i've worked in a few kitchens....it's easy to build a little family in that shit

most of my service industry friends have a big "friends giving" day the first week of december.....shit's amazing... motherfuckers from all over the place... but they all work in bars n shit doing various jobs.....we like a little family forreal....so again.. dude story common as fuck, and i 100% understand that shit

The minimum wage hasn't really increased to keep in line with the cost of living increases which happen steadily every year. That said, it was inaccurate to say he's never received a raise. That said, I can't really say anyone is in the wrong here. You would think that over 50+ years, he would have built enough of a relationship with the owners that they would pay him more just because of the familiarity. That said, we don't really know how that has worked. Different owners might have been in and out of there. At the end of the day, bussing isn't exactly a job associated with a high salary so you can't really knock the owners for paying minimum wage for it. I'm pretty sure over all that time, he had the chance to move up and do other things. He seems to have chosen to stay where he's at.

What happened to the "you gotta work hard, be dedicated to get a raise?" This guy was the epitome of it & still didn't get compensated for it. That's why I say there's no loyalty to a job. You should be an opportunist at them because once he miss a step then his employer will try to find a way to get rid of him, even if it's purposely putting more work on him. Only loyalty should be amongst your love ones & those who are loyal to you.

He said that limited schooling “probably helped smooth out his world — I would doubt Loggan really ever dreamed about buying a Cadillac.”

Translation: He's a negro that knows his place and as long as he doesn't backtalk, he has a place here and will accept the crumbs we sweep to him."

I hate to see people getting finessed like that too. I've seen it on numerous occasions. They'll put emphasis on bonus but never salary rises. They like to say things that'll make the employee feel like they're making it by making little jokes like "Ohhhh!! It's payday. What you about to do with that big money this weekend?"....."What's up big money, let me borrow $10?". Knowing damn well that he barely getting by like the Good Times.
