I'd go back further than that. Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Yu Gi Oh, Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball, Trigun, Gundam Wing, etc I think is really what pushed it into the mainstream.

Not as much as the big 3…..anime went into superstar mode in the mid 00’s

I'm an old school anime head, so for me it goes back to the 70's and the little bit we used to get back then and through the 80's. In the 90's that shit was still mostly underground nerd shit but when Dragonball and Sailor Moon hit CN, it was a wrap. Toonami was playing shit in the early 00's and it was catching on even more then.
