In August 2018 SVT reported that rape statistics in Sweden show that 58% of men convicted of rape and attempted rape over the past five years were born outside of the European Union: Southern Africans, Northern Africans, Arabs, Middle Easterns, and Afghans.[11][12] Swedish Television's investigating journalists found that in cases where the victims didn't know the attackers, the proportion of foreign-born sex offenders was more than 80%.[11] The number of rapes reported to the authorities in Sweden significantly increased[4] by 10% in 2017,[13][14] according to latest preliminary figures from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention.[13][14] The number of reported rape cases was 73 per 100,000 citizens in 2017, up 24% in the past decade.[14] Official numbers show that the incidence of sexual offences is on the rise;[4][11][14] the Swedish Government has declared that young women are facing the greatest risks and that most of the cases go unreported.[4]

In March 2018, newspaper Expressen investigated gang rape court cases from the two preceding years and found that there were 43 men having been convicted. Their average age was 21 and 13 were under the age of 18 when the crime was committed. Of the convicted, 40 out of the 43 were either immigrants (born abroad) or born in Sweden to immigrant parents.[51] Another investigation by newspaper Aftonbladet found that of 112 men and boys convicted for gang rape since July 2012, 82 were born outside Europe. The median age of the victims was 15, while 7 out of 10 perpetrators were between 15 to 20.[52]

But Sweden had thousands more reported rapes, and there is no ethnic breakdown for those.
Immigration and crime are major issues in Sweden's general election campaign. The vote is on 9 September.
The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats hope to make significant ground, although they have slipped to third place in the latest opinion poll.
The Mission Investigation programme, due to be broadcast on Wednesday by SVT, said the total number of offenders over five years was 843. Of those, 197 were from the Middle East and North Africa, with 45 coming from Afghanistan.
"We are very clear in the programme that it is a small percentage of the people coming from abroad who are convicted of rape," chief editor Ulf Johansson told the BBC.
He pointed out that the number of reported rapes in Sweden was far higher, so no conclusions could be drawn on the role of immigrants in sexual attacks.

The man was also found guilty of two sexual offences committed when he was living in Skellefteå, northern Sweden, earlier in the autumn: sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl; and exposing himself to and groping a third woman.
He was also found guilty of robbery, knife crime, and petty drugs offences.
