Cam Newton Trade Rumors: Panthers Open to Deal 'For a Significant Return'


The Cam Newton era could be coming to a close for the Carolina Panthers.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com: "The expectation is that the Panthers will attempt to trade Newton this offseason provided they can get a large deal to make it worth their while. In what could be the most active quarterback market in years, Newton—if healthy—could be the centerpiece."
Rapoport added: "With Kyle Allen showing potential and Will Grier possessing traits that led the Panthers to grade him better than the third-rounder he was, they have options. And a top option is for the new coach and still-GM Marty Hurney to move on from the former MVP Newton, collect a bounty of picks, and start fresh."

But what could they get?
Rapoport posited that Newton's value could fall somewhere between the fourth-round pick the Denver Broncos gave up for Joe Flacco this offseason and the first- and fourth-round picks the Minnesota Vikings gave up to acquire Sam Bradford in 2016.
Newton, 30, is due $18.6 million next season, making him a relative bargain if he's healthy. It's the final year of his deal, though any team giving up assets would likely look to sign him long term.
While Newton wasn't having a great season before a Lisfranc injury ended his season (572 passing yards, no touchdowns, one interception, 56.2 percent completion percentage in two games), he remains a solid option. Last season, he threw for 3,395 yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, completing 67.9 percent of his passes while also rushing for 488 yards and another four scores.
Since winning MVP and leading the Panthers to the Super Bowl in the 2015 season, however, Newton took the Panthers to the postseason just once in the next three years. They'll surely miss the postseason once again at 5-7.
The Kyle Allen era started with a bang this season, as the team won his first four starts. The Panthers are 1-5 since then, however.
Nonetheless, with head coach Ron Rivera already fired, it appears the Panthers will choose a clean slate this offseason and move on from their longtime franchise quarterback.

Sources: Patriots won't bring back Antonio Brown despite recent struggles


Although they need additional offensive weapons for their postseason push, the New England Patriots will not re-sign wide receiver Antonio Brown, league sources told ESPN.

Brown has apologized to the Patriots, to the public and to others, but New England hasn't considered bringing him back since deciding to move on from him during the season, as much as the offense could use him.

Although Brown won't be resurfacing in New England, he is expected to find work once the NFL wraps up its investigation.

"There are teams out there that would love to sign him once [his case] is resolved," said Brown's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who has maintained regular contact with a handful of teams regarding their interest in Brown.

But the NFL's investigation is almost three months old, and even if it were to wrap up before the regular season ended, Brown could wind up on the commissioner's exempt list and face additional league-imposed discipline.

Brown, 31, is being investigated by the NFL under its personal conduct policy following a lawsuit filed by his former trainer, Britney Taylor, that alleges she was sexually assaulted by Brown on multiple occasions. Brown also was accused of sexual misconduct at his home by an artist who was working there in 2017.

Brown met with the NFL for eight hours last month in Florida as part of the investigation, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson. Brown has denied the allegations.

One day later, Brown apologized to the Patriots and owner Robert Kraft in an Instagram post, writing: "Mr. Kraft I apologize sincerely to you and your organization! All I wanted to be was an asset to the organization; sorry for the bad media and the drama ! Thank you sincerely AB".

Among those to like the post was Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The Patriots released Brown on Sept. 20, just 11 days after signing him. Two days later, Brown called out Kraft and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, comparing their legal issues with his own.

The Patriots (10-2) lead the AFC East but are just 14th in the NFL in total offense and have struggled to score of late, averaging just 18 points per game in their past four contests.
