I think both of them are annoying here. I believe both examples she gave are legit cases of racism. I don't get Shannon's point at all when she says that the other kids called her the N word. Yeah, they were kids, but that doesn't change the fact they were being racist. I understand where he's coming from with the teacher though. I believe Amanda is still right. Racism was probably still at play there, but Shannon is not wrong about the fact that teachers do not like being corrected by students. I got in trouble at school for that too, and a lot of my teachers were black. Again, I actually agree with Amanda's take on the situation. However, that exchange does make her sound stupid. It was basically:
Amanda: That was a clear example of racism I faced coming up.
Shannon: Do you think she would have reacted the same way if it was a white child?
Amanda: It's not on me to decide that.
What? It's weird for her to punt on that question. If she believes the teacher was being racist, then that automatically means that the teacher only treated her the way she did because of her race. Amanda's answer should have been "No, I don't think she would have reacted the same way with a white child." If she's not confident the teacher wouldn't have gotten mad about being corrected regardless of the race of the student, then she can't really say teacher was being racist. Clearly Amanda believes the teacher only responded badly because of Amanda's race, so why not just say that?
