Celebrity status doesn’t equate to financial freedom but the notion exists, creating false ideas and assumptions about those who bare a talent we don’t possess. It’s also what caused many gossip and news outlets to shame former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens for having a side gig at Trader Joe’s.

On Friday (Aug. 31), a story regarding the theater actor was published by Daily Mail and shared on Fox News when customer Karma Lawrence snapped a photo of Owens working at a Trader Joe’s in Clifton, New Jersey. Lawrence, who is the wife of the store’s security manager, said she was shopping when she noticed the 57-year-old.

She went on to call the moment a “shock” to her. “It made me feel really bad. I was like, “Wow, all those years of doing the show and you ended up as a cashier,” she said.

The story was picked up by a number of places but that didn’t stop fans from coming to Owens defense. Owens is not only an acting teacher at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York but a consistently working actor.

He’s appeared on plenty of critically acclaimed series like Elementary, FX comedy It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, HBO’s Divorce and Blue Bloods.

He’s also been the source of inspiration for fellow working actors.

His upcoming projects include the film Impossible Monsters and the short film Fizzle. In addition to listing his accomplishments, fans called out the outlets for shaming the actor for having a “regular job.”

Owens doesn’t have a social platform, but we’re sure the fan love is well appreciated.

Smh. I say it all the time, a lot of ppl to good for this World

Nigga out here working like a Jamacian and somehow that's a bad ting

Its this American( not solely)thing where we equate your worth or impact based on what you do how much you make and what we see. We cant fathom somebody being rich and famous for 5 or 6 years and 25 years later seeing them doing regular stuff like we do. I personally think we sick for that all it does it put pressure on folks. Niggas feel less than for not being a famous rapper, or having a job thats universally respected like a doctor or something. I think we look down on being normal.

But this dude still in the game and doing what he wants but because he dont have social media we think he broke.

It's quite a few a celebrities.who left Hollywood to work a regular gig there's a YouTube video about this. The actor who played Anakin Skywalker Hayden Christianson works on his farm krayzie bone of bone thugs works as a real estate agent etc everybody can't have a reality show when there 15 minutes are up it depends on how good your agent is I guess.

maybe he likes to do it and works for the benefits.... a couple of yrs ago there wss a story of this ex NBA player who worked as a crossing guard not for the money bit cuz he needed so,ethimg to do and wanted the health amd insurance benefits

Was just about to say this.

Coming out of pocket for a family insurance without the leverage of regular employment benefits is a bitch.

Know many people doing pretty well that work solely because of that
