Like think about it
Optimus and megatron were great friends and they lived their whole lives believing in something. A god, and ideal, a society
They both find out that it was all a lie at the same time
Two branches happen
Optimus is lost but he has faith that when the people find out they won’t be angry and destroy everything
Megatron is lost and pretty much realizes his life is meaningless and it’s all for nothing
That turns into rage against sentinel because if he didn’t just act that way there wouldn’t have been a false belief to begin with
He wants to kill sentinel
Optimus doesn’t want megatron to kill him because it’s not right
They now have opposing views and they both care about their own belief enough to oppose their friend
They both are now willing to die over it
(They don’t let each other know about that new realization because deep down they know the other is going to be against it and it’ll be a problem
This actually shows at this point megatron in the process of slowing changing still cares about prime despite them having diff ideals
They both come across a group led by starcream who they both find out that they want to kill sentinel also
Megatron likes them because they share the same ideal and since megatron would never bow to starscream because he feels likes better than him because he took so long trying to kill him vs megatron who wants to do it immediately
Megatron now feels like he should lead them because he would do a better job
That’s why they fight and then they follow megatron after he wins
Now starscream HAS to follow megatron but he secretly resents him (which is why in the cartoons he would always try to steal megatron’s spot or try to betray him.) Then literally if he’s not doing that he would have to obey megatron in the meantime because there’s only two choices
Optimus, elita, and B don’t want to kill him at all so they don’t fit with this group and feel like they should get away from them
Megatron instantly has followers and prim and his crew are only
Then sentinel emerges or they finally meet again
Megatron is in a position to kill
Optimus stops him
They fight over killing sentinel or not
Prime is shot and about to fall
Megatron from instinct and history tried to save his friend
Then he realizes if he’s dead then megatron can now have what he wants
He now is putting what he wants over the friendship
He tells prime you can’t get in my way ever again (referring to prime breaking protocol and they both suffer for it because megatron feels obligated as a friend to always be there for prime even if he didn’t agree)
That bred resentment
Megtron drops prime
That’s the friendship now severed and can never go back to how it used to be
