Better Overall: Current NBA Players vs Old School NBA Players?

Old NBA players is big part of the reason the league is viewed the way it is

Prime NBA was 2000-2018

90s is extremely hard to watch regardless who playing.
Barkley
Shaq
Dr. J

I can name plenty more who been shitting on the players for over a decade. But now we got LBJ, Kyrie and Draymond firing back

I love it

Fuck lebron but he's not lying. Pace and speed of game matters in comparison when talking about wear and tear on bodies. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I haven’t gone more than a couple days without watching or playing ball since 1995. It's not a condemnation on 80s 90s or even early 00s ball. Shit is just much faster. And tactics to combat it like fullcourt press are used more in the league today which also leads to more injuries.

Nah, running to the 3 point line every time down doesn't make the season tougher. These niggas barely touch the paint.

He's just building an excuse for load management.
More like his wack ass usage since he refuses to play defense

I expanded reasoning in my post. Should be easy to understand but some of yall process shit with feelings lol.

I thought the same thing, but apparently the pace in the 80s was pretty close to now. I feel like there is much more movement on defense for the people that actually play defense. I don't necessarily know that any of that cancels out the fewer back to backs, better healthcare, and improved travel accommodations. Also, the game itself seems to stop a lot more with all the replays and other quirks. So while the players might move around more when the action is on, it does seem like they get to rest more in the game.

On topic, I think the average skill level is higher now. Back in the day, being a goon was actually a common role. Those dudes wouldn't even make it into the league now, so that kinda raises the skill level by default. That said, at the higher levels, I don't think there is a big difference. Top players have more range now than they did before, but, at the same time, have basically completely lost some skills (e.g., playing in the post). Defense is a mixed bag too. You have some great defenders now, but a lot of the top players these days don't play any defense. That wasn't really common back in the day. Jokic is considered the best in the world, and he's a poor defender at best. I can't think of an era where the top guy was that deficient on one side of the ball.

That escalated quickly lol chill out Ice

Today's pace is faster, but it's less physical. These niggas got private jets, cyrotherapy, old sorts of shit. Niggas in the 80s and 90s didn't have shit but a pack of brew.

Players today have to cover more distance on defense and can't just tackle eachother. Nba defense back then was just anything goes. It's more nuanced today cause players are more skilled offensively overall and the league protects them more leading to much more movement and ground coverage defensively.

Alot of people will inherently dismiss this because LeBron said it but even some older NBA players who've become analysts and front office people along with actual doctors have been saying this for a while. Especially when talking about the increase in calf, ACL and Achilles injuries

The load management thing doesn't even happen anymore. If a player isn't legit injured they're not just sitting out to sit out. That was a short time period started by the Spurs that the NBA fined teams for to make them stop.

Sounds about right. Though I will say having someone hanging on you play after play and have to take constant bumps and hits wears on you. It's a different type of wear and tear than what players today deal with.

Lebron isn't the one that should speak on this though since he hasn't played consistent defense since that first championship in 2016 give a year or two. He's not the only one though.

Players are more skilled today for the simple fact that they train differently than in the past. Bigs had no reason to be shooting corner threes. Guards weren't practicing on step backs and crossovers from all angles bcuz most likely it was gonna be called traveling back then. Pivot foot was a thing back in the day. Can't overlook rule changes when it comes to comparing eras. What about BBIQ? Is it smart to keep spamming threes when you are 2 for 12? How many players today even move without the ball or cut to the basket? Pace of today's game is indeed faster, but the stars are playing fewer minutes than in the past so imo that evens out.

Getting 40 in a clogged lane, relying on your midrange and movement>>>>>>>>>>>> playing keep away at the three point line, calling for screens until you have a shot.

I don't have no dog in this fight bcuz I'm a bball junkie. All eras are flawed. And I'm gonna keep on watching.
