Still pretty easy to change though

Though I had a dumbass moment when adding another SSD chip to my laptop. It has those screws that loosen and don't come out. I did not know that and kept unscrewing for way too long wondering why the fucker didn't pop out lol

The average person ain't going through alladat. This is the only laptop I own where it's not just "push two tabs and slide it out".

First time I ran into those types of screws was on a Dell laptop. The hard drive trays were accessible directly on the bottom of the laptop. I did the same shit: sat there turning that screw over and over and over wondering why it never came out

@konceptjones ended up ordering a used 7700k chip

Hopefully this buys me some time. Borderlands seems to have fixed itself.

I'm good on battlefield as long as I stick to close quarters maps where I guess there isn't much to render but the 64 players maps are a no go. All I end up doing is healing and dropping supplies cause it takes to long to traverse the map

Thinking about this again. Ps5 is going to be my last console I think. Maybe try after Christmas. My crusader kings 3 is lagging crazy and I want to get a couple of games that are mainly better in pc

Most PC games are ports

Very few are actually made specifically with PC players in mind and then they are ported to console

I like the pc gaming prices

I'm not a streamer or anything so I don't need 4k when 1080 is still feeding the streets proper

@konceptjones

Been trying to overclock my CPU but I'm nervous I'ma fuck something up cause last time I tried it, it kept shutting off after a few min

Had to do a factory reset in the BIOS to get it back working

Any tips?

You could wait until PS6 comes out and save money for a PC or save money for the build. That way you'd have time to save for a good one

I imagine a lot of people will likely make the switch when that crazy PS6 price comes out

None for modern processors other than you prolly need serious cooling to keep it stable.

I haven't had a need to overclock a processor since the 90's.

The only real issue with PC gaming is trying to future proof your rig causing you to spend a ton of money on the front end

Once the price for the next PS is revealed, the PC content creators start making vids on what you can buy with that money to build a PC and you can add or subtract from that

The bolded couldn't be truer. I have yet to see a need to go beyond 1080.

It's it cause they're better optimized out the gate these days?

The way I see it, a lot of folks are just throwing money at their machines needlessly. I get the want to have framerates high as shit, but unless your monitor can actually display at those framerates, it's kinda pointless. To consistently hit 60fps in any game and not dip below that is perfectly fine.

I think I remember seeing a YT video years ago about the big debate between 30/60 fps and basically your brain still processes images at 30 fps or something

Yea I think I’m save up for it. And it’s not an immediate concern. A dude I went to school with came up on the rarest come up. He brought a pc from a coworker for like 200. But it got like 2000 worth of equipment.

Now of course that’s rare asf but had me thinking. And I heard. Box trying to increase their price idk why

For me, it's understanding just how much more powerful CPU's are compared to back inna day along with GPU's. Granted, I'm not up on the latest, greatest games 'cause I'm still playing Doom Eternal, and that shit was released in early 2020.

But think about this: The machine I run Doom Eternal on was released in 2014 with CPU's that were released in 2014 (Haswell-EP) and a GPU from 2013, and while, yeah this is all workstation class shit I'm running (two Xeon processors and a Quadro video card), it was all outdated by the time Doom Eternal was released but this is the performance I get playing it in 1080 with everything set to "High" except shadow details which are set to "Ultra":

Framerates go from 60 and will dip into the 30's when there's a lot going on, but its still playable. I've given thought to upgrading the processors to a pair of 22 core Broadwell processors and I've been looking at sourcing out a newer GPU recently, mostly eyeballing a Quadro P5000 'cause they're not too hard on the wallet for a 16GB card (unless I fuck around and get lucky on a Quadro RTX5000 auction). That would give me a performance jump to play more current titles comfortably but the machine would still be considered "outdated" by today's standards.

I think folks really don't understand just how powerful these newer processors and GPUs really are or how capable some of the old stuff is when it comes to gaming today.

So I did a thing... Like... right after I made this post. Total with shipping was $36 and change. I'll prolly install it this weekend.

I didn't upgrade the machine that weekend. In fact, I kinda forgot I even copped the processor until about an hour ago while looking for something else on my desk and I came across the shipper it came in. I also bought a rechargeable blower to clean the dust out of this thing, 'cause I can't even remember the last time I've cleaned it. Should have it back up and running sometime tonight and I'll see what kind of a difference it made.

Gatdammit this shit needs to be cleaned!

One of my other PC's has been giving me problems for a number of years. I've swapped the mobo on it about 3 years ago and it's still problematic. It decides to turn on when it wants to, and I finally got around to dropping a new PSU into it after pilfering the one it had to swap into my DAW machine in my bedroom. Turned the bitch on and it refuses to boot. I'm thinking it's the processor that's been dying a very slow death and it' finally kaput. So, I bought another one for it; a Xeon X3360. Basically it's a Core 2 Quad Q9950 in Xeon clothing. About to pull this thing apart and install it.
