OPINION Has Ryan Coogler Surpassed Spike Lee?

While I wouldn't necessarily call it a coming of age film, I do think trying to capture the weight of the daughter growing up in a house full of boys, being the only girl and having to juggle a lot of things at an early age was nice to see.

Dealing with her parents dysfunction in their marriage, dealing with her mother's death, and trying to navigate that space after (albeit it was pretty short). I feel like I understand what Spike was attempting to do.

I'm not saying it should've won an Oscar but I don't think the movie is as bad as y'all making it

Spike Lee made movies at a time when black men were on the come up as far as controlling our likeness and image the way we needed to. We dealt with a lot of cornball racist tropes, dishonest imagery and what he did as far as helping to aid in restoring our image? It was monumental. However many of his films, if you look at them from the scope of today and how society moves? They’re all dated and relics.

This is a crazy take. Every director has that actor/actresses that they just gel with and make great movies with. Seem like you just trying to discredit those guys work

this a wild conclusion you came up with after reading what you did lol

Coogler literally has no movie directing work without MBJ

I can’t compare him to spike Lee until he gets more originals under his belt or has more work without MBJ to assess him as a director

How is that discrediting him?
