Admittedly, I'm not as versed in all things salary cap but I also recognize when you have to have a move and strike when you can

Don't let OKC fool you. They are an anomaly. They will break up when it's time to pay everyone
That’s the beauty of how OKC has set themselves up though. They have so many draft picks that even when they move some of the role players before paying them big, they will have another person In the tuck waiting to take their place.

Chet isn’t getting the max (so far) because he didn’t hit any of the bench marks (league awards and all league teams) to do so and his injury history. He will get a great contract, but not the one Jalen Williams is about to get. That will also help OKC with their salary issues.

The Thunder aren’t gonna be able to keep all those role players, but finding and locking up solid dudes on friendly long term deals like Joe and Wiggins is how they SHOULD some what stay ahead of the curve.

I think yall severely underestimate the new CBA and 2nd apron when it comes to roster building and flexibility going forward

Having cheap cost controlled talent is going to be crucial

I get that. It’s a fair point. We still have all of our 2nd round picks for what it’s worth and young talent that we can flip for future firsts. Theres still a lot of flexibility for future moves to improve the roster.

Btw one of those “unprotected first round picks” people are over reacting too is the 16th pick in this draft while two of the other 4 are likely late firsts. We just saw what a year from hell looks like due to injury and we still made the playoffs. Those picks are highly unlikely to fall in the top 20.

This also assumes that every pick they have, they will hit and that person will be able to contribute to the extent the current and previous picks have and that's just not guaranteed

Nah, it doesn’t assume every pick they make will hit. 🤣

Do you know how many 1st round draft picks they own for the next few seasons? They could draft players or use them in trades. They could flip those picks for more picks further out.

The point I made was they have flexibility and multiple means to keep a contender for a long time barring something totally crazy happening.

The funny thing about all of this is what they are doing isn’t something new or ground breaking. I literally watched my Spurs be a playoff team for 20 straight seasons doing something similar. You find your 1 or 2 stars and continuously build around them with cheap contracts, via the draft, undrafted free agency, or waiver wire. Dont over pay for marginal talent or role players.
