OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

Basically.
Killmonger wanted vengeance not no revolution. They ARE NOT one and the same.

Once Killmonger had the heart-shaped herbs destroy (which were being prepared for the next generation of kings), that was the indication he had no long term plans for the future outside causing as much pain, death & destruction as possible , even if it meant the downfall of Wakanda. T'Challa naturally could not let this happen.

In the end T'Challa rejects his father and ancestors isolationism of Wakanda and acknowledged that Killmonger was right. They can and should more to help. Which is why he went to Oakland to build to the outreach centers to honor & pay homage to his uncle & cousin.

Killmonger is alot of these internet revolutionary ass niggas on film. A bunch of anger and ideas but no real idea on how to execute things in the long term. Just a bunch of "Yeah lets kill whitey. That will fix everything"...as if once you take over a nation then all the work is done. Nigga had no plan on what to do for the next generation at all

You said it!

Even as they pull shit out their asses to justify why they hated the movie and they simultaneously romanticize Killmonger as this great revolutionary leader who was motivated to "liberate" all black people in the world because he hated & resented white supremacy.

I'm like no, thats only half of the equation

"No,no,no, they wanted to stop the revolution!!!

No, they wanted to stop World War fuckin' 3!

Because Killmonger was equally angry with and was motivated to get back at his family ( his uncle to be precise) in a personal vendetta for not only killing his father but for abandoning him in America, leaving him to suffer at the hands of white supremacy.

I'll say THIS is what drove him to do what he did more than "liberating" black people....who he admitted to indiscriminately killing

All T'Chaka had to do after killing his father was order Zuri to ""Go retrieve my nephew Prince N'Jadaka,we will take him home""

And there will be no Killmonger

Are you assuming that because he didn't go on a diatribe about his plan for economic stability, in a 2 hour comic book movie mind you, that he didn't have one? An MIT grad and an obviously intelligent and learned individual just decided one day, "kill whitey and all will fall into place"?

No, I think that's drawing conclusions based on a lack of evidence but not ignoring evidence that may suggest otherwise. A couple examples, in the first Iron Man Obadiah Stane wanted to kill Tony Stark and use his arc technology to sell better weapons. We don't get a scene where he verbally States his business plan but the fact that he ran the company for years makes it feasible that he had one. Then you have Loki who seemed to only want to be a king for the purpose of sitting on a throne being praised by his subjects. But there's nothing in the slightest that suggests that he had a clue on how to rule a city, let alone an entire planet.

My point in saying it's a 2 hour comic book movie is to say as great as the messaging was here, the pacing would have taken a nosedive if they went that far into Killmonger's long-term plan. What we know is that he planned on using United States tactics to create a worldwide Wakandan empire using what he learned in MIT and the military. What could he have learned? Look no further than Obama and Bush's plans on restructuring Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. It starts with militarized action, then economic and political implementation.

Disney Opening Oakland STEM Center After Black Panther Success

"Mirroring the ending of Black Panther, Walt Disney is donating $1 million dollars to help open new STEM centers across the nation"

Not just Oakland, but basically every city in the country known to have a major black population that's in need of such a initiative. Dope move for real. It's all business, but either way, they didn't have to do it.

well Coogler is from there, Killmonger character was too, so i think its only natural, but its a step

I think you're misunderstanding me because I wasn't very clear. I'm saying they aren't just opening up the STEM center in Oakland. They are opening the centers in 12 different cities all with big black populations (e.g. ATL, DC, Harlem, etc...).

It's interesting to note that there was a petition on Change.org which demanded 25% of the proceeds be invested within the black community, particularly the STEM programs in which Disney has said to be funding.

I wonder if that petition made it up that far up the corporate ladder and this is the result of Disney reacting to the said petition.

Man, I was speaking to my boy about this movie today. Dude was born in Africa and raised in Canada. He said the film was subtly "hard" on African Americans. No lie.

I don't know why y'all don't see it. Although it was made by African Americans (director and screenwriter), this film is not kind to African Americans (as it will seem in the eyes of non-African Americans). Trust me.

I don’t know if the film was “hard on African Americans”, but one of the underlining themes were the struggles between African Americans and non African Americans.
