Vanessa Williams recalls 'hurtful' backlash from the Black community after her historic Miss America win

On one hand, it is messed up if blacks were shitting on her accomplishment because she is light skinned (if that actually happened). On the other hand, if all they said was that she only got selected because she was light, they aren't completely wrong. It probably would have been more accurate to say that she was helped by her light complexion, but there is no question that a lighter skinned woman would have a leg up over a dark skinned woman in a beauty pageant ran by white people.

Also, lol @ her saying people should have been celebrating here intellect and other qualities. You won a beauty pageant. What does that accomplishment have to do with intellect? They didn't select her because she was smart.

Anyone in here who thinks saying 'you only won because you lightskin' is WORSE than 'black bitch you should die' needs to jump into some oncoming traffic

Vanessa is/was bad as fuck. I never recall anyone having an issue with her being lightskinned. I remember everyone liking her music and her movies and dudes like me just acknowledging that she was fine as hell. I guess I missed the beef.

Quote whoever said or even implied that.
Here you go

The crab's barrel mindset.

If one seemingly successful black person is light skinned, her own fellows are going to maul her apart. If she's dark skinned, they are going to belittle her. If she's medium skinned, they are going to find any excuse to spit on her face. If she's skinny or thin, they will ask her to get fat. And if she get fat, they will ask her to lose weight. If she originates from abroad, they are going to scream about "N***o Genocide" and policing about her Blackness, even if they all know they are one of the most badly positioned populations in the world to ask whoever are "pure blooded" Blacks (what the hell is even a "pure blooded Black"? Do you have ever followed Anthropologics and History in classes?) . If she's homeland, they will eventually gun her down. If she originates from the Motherland, they gonna throw bananas on her doorstep and complain later about why there has a lack of black unity.

People are never happy. ?
Ppl feed off negatively bro. Ain't nuthin new
I can remember the sentiment she's talking about. She's not just pulling it out her ass. I was a kid and was confused on why her being lightskinned made it any different to some.
"Black excellence, but I guess
When it comes to me it's not the same though, all goodie"

I remember being at cookouts and when she was with Rick Fox people were shittin on her for being light skin. I believe her. Sometimes black people are their own worst enemy.
Uh, no. Yes, blk were happy she won. But there was a sentiment among blk ppl that she only won "cuz she was light skin"

I can vividly remember sayin back in the day that she only won cuz of her skin tone, they aint giving no dark skin blk woman that crown.
That's not because she shut her mouth about the latter party for 40 years it made her traumatic experience less harmful or true for either.

We all know how African American gossipers acts against light skinned sisters... heck, we just all know how African American gossipers acts against every successful brother or sister. And what I used to hear from people here in Canada or from France and Belgium onlime weren't better. Why do you think the likes of Yannick Noah and Omar Sy used to shut up for very long about black community issues?? Or that Normand Bratwaithe in Canada has NO affiliation whatsoever with black folks here except for taunting us or being mocked about his part black heritage (and to be honest, he want it. Nigga's a well-reputed Coon and a Sambo type comedian) .

Don't let me start with Gabourey Sidibe, David Kaluuya and Anna Diop...

So your comprehension is horrible is what you're saying. How about you bold the part of each post saying what you claimed was said. This should be interesting.
Her words:
'Despite the racist protests and backlash she received from white people, Williams says that the worst criticism she got was from her "own people" who she felt diminished her achievement for being "too light-skinned'

Your words:
'I can remember the sentiment she's talking about. She's not just pulling it out her ass.'

So either your comprehension is horrible and you just cosigning her to cosign her OR you agree with her and follow the good ole we our worst enemy trope.

I'll await rebuttal before I tell you to jump into traffic

I like how you tried to cherry pick and use the author's words instead of hers. Her words were:

“Not only was I getting attacked from White folks saying she doesn’t represent us, but some Black folks [said], ‘Oh they only picked her cause she’s light-skinned and has light eyes,’” she shared. “They kind of dismissed my talent, my intellect, and my achievement. So that was probably more hurtful.”

And again show me where I, or anyone else, said the bold:

Anyone in here who thinks saying 'you only won because you lightskin' is WORSE than 'black bitch you should die' needs to jump into some oncoming traffic

Comprehension....
