“buying the block”

To those with no issue, do you have an issue with any kind of gentrification? And if so what kind?

The issue I take with gentrification is when it affects old people homeowners who are on fixed incomes. When those people have owned their homes for many years and the neighborhood gentrifies and raises their property taxes to a level that they can't afford on a fixed income. So now they are forced to sell their homes or see it go up for auction because the city, county or state took their home for unpaid property taxes. Sometimes when you see the cheap ass amounts of money the city gov't have taken peoples homes for you know the shit is part of a diabolical plan

That is shit is fucked up and not all cities, counties and states have done something for older home owners in those situations where they allow them to continue to pay the old amount of property taxes before the area was gentrified.

It's not all bad but it certainly ain't all good either.

Banks also determine who gonna move where

If the banks not giving money to black people, then black people not gonna be able to buy the home.

The issue should be with the banks not the house flipper

When homeowners are forced to sell due to property tax. Especially older folks.

Certain age the original homeowner should have a fixed rate when comes to property tax. Once they hit that age it can not go higher and should remain the same until he or she sells, moves out or pass away.

Im not an expert in house flipping but 90k to renovate!?

You could damn near tear the whole thing down and start over for that price. And then sell it for MUCH more.

Yeah, I think this is the type most people talk about. You don’t think there are ever black people flipping those houses you mentioned?

I think it can be ugly on the large scale

when a development group wants to level an apartment complex for a strip mall i think thats fucked up

there's a low income complex here that was demolished 6 or 7 years ago for a new highway exit/entrance......no word on said highway connection yet

but even with that, there's nothing else thats been built...idk if the city benefited from that in any way but I dont see any individual or company that made a profit from that....so is it really gentrification?

Yes, the kind where the locale tax base is priced out of the market and have to move into worse living conditions. I.E. Here in SFL idk if it’s just me I noticed they’re pushing Black folks towards the highway(I95) where the options ain’t so pretty. However I’ve been hearing if Grandfather Clauses that protects the established tax base sadlythat’s just about it. I heard...

This sound like some hating ass shit.

Nah...It is some hating ass shit.

Black capilist is a bad thing now?

So black people suppose to limit how we progress?

Them same fake woke ass people I assume are providing jobs and educating black people on how to make money in others ways. I also assume they understand how gentrification actually works and how dumb asses help this process.

So much goes into this and this is very surface level thinking and complaining.

Foh

In fucking sane

I got problem with gentrification. Detroit is a great example now

Downtown looks hella nice but the surrounding areas haven't caught up. Other parts of the city look like some shit out a video game. Now you got all these whites walking around willy nilly when 10 yrs ago they wouldn't step foot in the city.

That said, I also have a problen with us not hopping on the real estate first, those of us with the means.

Its way too many buffs, hellcats and escalades and not enough upkept hoods

Exactly. But people gonna say they can get loans for cars and not houses.

Yall.

Black-owned gentrification is still gentrification. Black-owned prisons are still prisons.

"Black-owned" isn't a cure-all. it isn't some balm for oppressive structures.

Black capitalism is still capitalism. it is still the violent mechanism that places profit over the people. it is still an apparatus of state violence.

Black owned is black controlled...thus we can possible change conditions in our favor without outside influences.

We can’t complain about how the establishment treats us when we not trying to gain our own control over assets regardless of what that is.

We can’t scream unfair housing practices if we don’t own homes or banks or lending institutions.

Yeah, back inna day, the only time you saw white folks downtown was if they worked there, during the Hoedown or Taste Fest, or if they were crackheads roaming the streets. Past that, you ain't see YT down there. I used to work in Troy back in 2002 and would sometimes cut through downtown on the surface streets to get to the crib after work. The stadiums were up, the area around the Fox turned into nice ass brownstones and shit, white folks were walking around outside and everything. When I was there back in early July there was more white folks posted up at Campus Maritus in the middle of downtown than Black folks. Shit is weird but that's what they flipped it to attract.

I was just looking at the land bank out there earlier today. There's a ~2200 sq/ft 3 bedroom/1 bath crib out there off Fenkell and Livernois going for $1k. Looking at the damage in the pics, if I were to cop it, I'm looking at around $40k-$50k to get it livable again, maybe $70 to get it the way I would want it to be if I was gonna live there. That's still mad cheap for a two story brick home of that size and there's a grip of them in the land bank. And you're right, when I was there in July I saw more chargers and challengers than I care to even remember (and Mustangs... Detroit will never stop loving the 'Stang). Niggas could take that money and put it into a house in their neighborhood and fix it up to live in. If more cats did shit like that, the hood wouldn't look so damned hood.

I saw a shit load of spots in Detroit I want. Mad cheap. Hopefully it’s still that way when I stop thru

Seems like Twitter's argument is that blacks should invest money in upgrading the block then in turn sell or lease those investments at a much lower rate. In essence, altruistic charity, rather than american capitalism
