Everything I said was consistent with the distributive property of mathematics that I was taught in high school.


I just forgot what it was called when I was explaining the two equations.


Otherwise I would have cited it at the time.

No...... everything you said was close but if you was to take a test you would get every question wrong AND that is the disconnect with both of you are saying. You both are forgetting left to right AFTER parentheses nothing is connected to the parentheses no matter how it looks in the problem.

I have a 14yr old I had to get this very issue in his head.

In 86 I would've passed.


Simply because the distributive property was the prevailing method..........not PEMDAS.


I can adapt to PEMDAS.........it wouldn't be that difficult, but that wasn't how I was taught.

My point is if the problem was written correctly from the beginning with standard and conventional symbols this wouldn't be a discussion.
I was trying to bring theroms and actual properties to the discussion.

In response to this PEMDAS doesn't mean, multiplication before division.
What it means is whichever comes first left to right. Same with addition and subtraction.

Man this left to right shit is confusing. I just don't like the way the problems look or set up. At least I can narrow it down to the 2 most logical answers. Sheesh
