Would You Consider Ray Charles The Father Of Rock N Roll/Rhythm & Blues?

5 Grand

Old School Godfather
Elvis gets credited as being the King of Rock N Roll, but honestly I've never really been exposed to his music. People swear up and down that Elvis is the GOAT but his music never comes up on the radio, and you never hear about an Elvis Presley album in anybody's top 10 list (Including White people). I don't even know what Elvis' best song is.

I'm inclined to say that Elvis got propped up to be the GOAT, but when you really sit down and listen to the music, Ray Charles came out a good 5 years before Elvis and Ray's music stands the test of time, while Elvis's music doesn't stand the test of time and he looks like a fool when he dances.

It's not just about who was the absolute first person to make a song that is considered Rock N Roll/Rhythm & Blues. But who had a long lasting career that everybody recognizes. I'm sure you could go on google or wikipedia and find some song by an artist that nobody has heard of, but give me a big name artist that everybody knows who was the first to do it.

Fuck that nigga.

True story.

I had reserved baseline seats to a Lakers playoff game back in the day at the Forum. I had a hot little thang that I was tryin' to impress, so them seats was gonna be the icing on the cake to some serious one night stand fuckin'. So when I get to will call to grab my tickets I was informed that "management" was sorry but they had no choice but to give my tickets to Ray Charles. Ray "Blinder than Stevie Wonder" Charles. I was pissed and embarrassed all at the same time. They did give me tickets about 10 rows directly behind this nigga and all we could eat to make up for it.

I'm sittin' behind this nigga the whole game burnin' a hole in the back of his head. I was heated. It don't matter where this nigga sit bcuz he can't see a damn thing anyway. This nigga was just sittin' there rollin' his fuckin neck and shit and then had the nerves to leave at halftime. Fuck Ray Charles.

To answer your question tho, James Brown = The King & Godfather of Soul/RnB during that era.

Good call on James Brown, but his first record was in 1957, Ray Charles' first record was in 1950

Ray Charles had already made a name for himself when James Brown was still a rookie.

And for the record, Elvis' first record was in 1954, which puts Elvis before James Brown. Not saying that his music was better, but he came out first.

This is what you said in your opening post

"It's not just about who was the absolute first person to make a song that is considered Rock N Roll/Rhythm & Blues. But who had a long lasting career that everybody recognizes. "

In the thread title you say "father" or rock n roll and rnb ,but then in the OP you say "king". Those are 2 different things.

What?!?!

Ray Charles had a long lasting career and everybody knows who he is. Same for Elvis and James Brown, but Ray Charles was first. His first record came out in 1950, several years before JB and Elvis.

Can you think of anybody before Ray Charles that went on to be a huge Rock/R&B star?

Nah i'm saying being the "Father/First" of something isn't the same as being the "King" of it.

Which one are you asking, who's the Father or who's the King?

Who's the father?

Who was first?

Who was the first Rock/R&B star to have a lasting career?

Chuck Berry's first record was 1955
Little Richard's first record was 1951
Elvis' first record was 1954
James Brown's first record was 1957

Ray Charles dropped his first record in 1950 and everybody knows him.

I always consider Chuck berry the father of Rock n Roll as well. Ray Charles may have been before him, as you say, in terms of first record released. But the idea we have of Rock star with big flamboyant personality and dancing all wild and running across the stage strumming a guitar, that was Chuck Berry.

But i don't think either of them would have sat here and argued who was the ONE. those two along with Little Richard and James Brown, all belong in the discussion.

I was just about to say this.

Ray Charles ain't never been assicoated w/ Rock & Roll. Chuck Berry is the King and Godfather of it.

This. 5 keeps meshing shit together. U can’t blend rock and rnb together.

Chuck Berry literally created rock n roll. From how the guitar is played till this day to how rock is performed till this day.

Soul/rnb is all James Brown.

Rock n Roll is hard genre to pin down because its really (like most music) a culmination of few genres and social movements rolled into one but I think Rock n Roll is even more of a hybrid then most other genres which make it so hard trace to one person/movement...

I think Fats Domino was the first Rock n Roll artist to actually sell a million copies in the late 40s or early 50s, but imo Chuck Berry was the first to take it to the next level mainstream wise, so I would say Chuck Berry is the figure head of Rock n Roll...
