Women's Advocacy Group Wants Spotify to Also Pull Chris Brown, Eminem & Others From Curated Playlists

Women’s advocacy group Ultraviolet is applauding Spotify’s new policy banning hate content and hateful conduct that has brought with it high profile removals of R. Kelly and XXXTentacion from curated playlists, but in an open letter published Monday (May 14) is also asking for more.

As well as R. Kelly and XXXTentacion, the letter written by Ultraviolet executive director Shaunna Thomas requests that Spotify take action against other artists who have been accused of sexual misconduct, including Chris Brown, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nelly, Eminem and others.

“Every time a famous individual continues to be glorified despite allegations of abuse, we wrongly perpetuate silence by showing survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence that there will be no consequences for abuse. That has a cultural effect far beyond one individual artist,” wrote Thomas.

She added that Spotify’s action demonstrates the company "is following the lead of Black women who demanded that these two men, who have sexually and physically abused women for years, not be promoted and celebrated.”

Ultraviolet hopes the open letter will inspire other music platforms to follow in Spotify’s footsteps.

To CEO Daniel Ek:

Thank you for taking the important first step of removing infamous abusers R. Kelly and XXXTentacion from your official playlists. Your action demonstrates that Spotify is following the lead of Black women who demanded that these two men, who have sexually and physically abused women for years, not be promoted and celebrated.

On behalf of our one million members, UltraViolet applauds and supports this choice.

Yet as you know, these two men are not the only abusers on your platform. We implore you to take a deeper look at the artists you promote.

Every time a famous individual continues to be glorified despite allegations of abuse, we wrongly perpetuate silence by showing survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence that there will be no consequences for abuse. That has a cultural effect far beyond one individual artist.

While nowhere near a comprehensive list, here are several abusers or groups of abusers

who continue to profit from your promotion:

● Chris Brown
● The Red Hot Chili Peppers
● Nelly
● Eminem

● Don Henley of The Eagles
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith
● Tekashi 6ix9ine
● Ted Nugent

We publish this as an open letter because we hope other platforms like iTunes, Google Play

Music, and Pandora will continue to follow your lead.

Thank you again for your thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,
Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director, UltraViolet

Slippery slope.. they get rid of everyone that has committed an offence or been charged with something.. they aint gonna have ANY content...

Shits an empty gesture if they remove these guys from their playlists but their content is still on the platform overall.. foh

Makes me no never mind since I bootleg 90% of shit anyway... lol

The problem, as I see it, is that R Kelly was accused of being a pedophile 25 years ago and his female fans still embraced him. That pedo/rape charge had zero effect on his ability to get radio play or get gigs.

Now he's been around for about 25 years. I don't think anybody can stop R Kelly fans from liking R Kelly.

Also, all it takes is for somebody to make an alternate streaming service that plays R Kelly, Eminem, Chris Brown, etc. and its a moot point.

Pick 10 random hoes from that group and I'll bet atleast 6 of them would give them dudes pussy everytime.

Who do these women think they are? they need to be in the kitchen cooking for us men and wearing that pretty dress we like.

I really hate this new overly sensitive, PC, me too culture that we live in....smmfh. Mfs always have to take shit to the extreme.
If they applied this ban to most music artists the playlists would be looking like .....

But they don’t do that shit to politicians.

Exactly. Meanwhile Trump can fuck porn stars, grab pussies and all other manner of questionable shenanigans.
Half of these mfs in politics, entertainment, sports, etc wouldn't have jobs if they truly started enforcing bans
and zero tolerance policies across the board regardless of supporting evidence or when an incident occurred. It's a slippery slope.
