Bruh, I grew up in a West Indian home in the West indies. Later I moved to Canada. I was in on hip hop/rnb early (in the 1980s), but only was exposed to a fuller range of the Black American musical tradition later. My father listened to calypso, and my mother was a Christian. So I wasn't raised listening to Johnny Taylor.

What I don't get is ... your point.
