There's a few theories out there, but I always felt Paulie and Patsy lined him up.

Paulie was too damn loyal to Tony to be the one to do it even with all the issues between the two

Man hell nah, Paulie was ready to fold a long time ago. He was feeding NY mad info and was gonna turn 100% on Tony until he realized Johnny Sack was playing him the whole time.

So, I recently watched this show in its entirety and i'm not as impressed by most of the critics who hold this in such high regard, but maybe that's for another convo

to answer the question, things were already set in motion by the time Tony wouldn't back that last move (cant remember the name) wanted him to make.

How the last episode ended was booty. Well...folks reaction to it was booty. Muthafuccas was actin like it was the greatest cinematic ending to a series ever.
