To be fair, it keeps going because people keep passing it along. I think if all the older people had died off in the 90s, we might have had a chance of avoiding all this. There still would have been fringes of racists among white people, but they wouldn't have gained all the power they have now.

I’d say Trump emboldened the racist shit by validating their ideals which has led to a resurgence of the bullshit.

All this racist shit as US policy was actually getting better and those racists were marginalized in broader society for the most part. Then Trump came in and told them to not be ashamed of being racist and convinced them they were actually the victims and shouldn’t have been marginalized. Old racists found strength in that and their kids and grandkids saw grandma and grandpa’s ideals vindicated.

And now here we are.
