Then
Canibus - he had the greatest debut rollout up until at that time based upon his verses on getting the Source's Hip Hop Quotable, Fantastic Four, Desperados, various freestyles, 4321 and finally 2nd Round Knockout with Mike Tyson dissing James Todd ......only for his album to be doo doo grits......huge let down...should have had other producers instead of Wyclef
Big Pun - next to Canibus he had the most anticipated album that year......even though he was down with Fat Joe, the original Not A Player was dope it had a video with a fat dude really spitting with the OJays, Beatnuts, Prodigy, Raekwon and others redoing scenes from "Scarface".....but it was "Still Not A Player" that people took notice and the machine was behind him
DMX - he was still hot off of Its Dark and Hell Is Hot when it dropped in May .....he was in Belly during the fall of 98 and then dropped FOMFBOMD in December.....I dont think that level of artistic output will be never matched again
Now
Outkast - Undeniable and timeless classic but fell victim to New York bias (even though it got 5 mics in the source) and a late release date (September 1998) put it as a disadvantage (when compared to the other releases).....still listen to this day
Pun - album lived up to the hype......went bar for bar with Quest, Deck and Prodigy.....dead in the middle of Little Italy, his 2nd verse on Beware, Adrian's Rocky 4 sample "You cant win" etc
DMX - like I said before.......he was still hot off of Its Dark and Hell Is Hot when it dropped in May.....he was in Belly during the fall of 98 and then dropped FOMFBOMB in December.....I dont think that level of artistic output in different platforms will be matched again
