LL dominated the second half of the 80s when I was in high school. He dropped his first album in late 1985 when Rap albums weren't that common. Radio rocked all the way into 1986. Then he dropped Bigger & Deffer which was a 5 mic classic. He had a battle with Kool Moe Dee, Ice T, Hammer and a handful of lesser known rappers.

LL didn't just have a three year run like Run DMC, DMX, 50 Cent or Dipset, he continued to drop heat well into the 90s. I Shot Ya (Remix) and 4,3,2,1 had LL rhyming with rookies and he still shined.

He even had some success in the early 00s.

The only reason he's not the all-time GOAT is because he was never really my favorite MC. I thought Rakim and KRS were better in the late 80s, although LL shined in the spotlight longer.

I voted top 10

Run-DMC had a longer run than 3 years.

I don't know if you consider How To Rob a hit, but it came out in 1999, then 50 had a bunch of hits in the 00s. Then he had a hit with Chris Brown a few years ago.

Rakim had the game on lock from 86-92, although top 40 radio stations weren't playing rap. But if you went to a high school dance with a DJ Eric B is President was the song that got the party started, also I Know You Got Soul.

Eric B & Rakim were huge amongst teenagers. There's no equivalent in todays market because top 40 stations play rap.

Anyway, Classic came out in 2008, so Rakim rocked from 86-08.

Those aint HITs. Just cuz u was dropping music that doesn't mean u was dropping HITs.

iight, then what do you consider a hit?

Cuz that Glory joint Common and JL did for Selma soundtrack in 2014 was #11 on the rap charts. And Com got top 20 rap songs in the 90's and 2000's.

88 on the charts aint a hit lol. It's gotta hit atleast top 40 to be a hit imo

1985 - 2013:

80's:

Rock The Bells

90's:

Only reason he is not in my top 5 is because the guys that I have there are just str8 up better at RAPPING

Uncle L was the one that brought the term "G.O.A.T" to us...

In addition to being one of the first hip hop artists to cross over into film and television.

AND

I appreciate the fact that he makes music catered to women while not being a fucking simp...

Yeah he def top 10

Yeah I always say he bought the term GOAT to hip hop too... Also that 'GOAT' album got serious plays, I fckn loved that album when I was a kid, LL really came back with a serious hip hop album...

I don't know if you're talking about 50 or Rakim, but Eric B & Rakim were superstars.

You don't know, so you can't give an informed opinion - all you can do is speculate. But I'm telling you that when Eric B Is President came on at a party everybody would rush the dance floor. That's a hit.

For that matter, The Bridge Is Over had the same effect.

I doubt either song cracked the top 50 on the R&B charts but there's some songs that were #1 on the R&B charts in 1986 that would clear a dance floor now, in 2019. In fact, if you played most of the songs that reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1986/87 none of those songs would have the same impact as if you Played Eric B Is President or The Bridge Is Over right now in 2019.

I know I'm right so I'm not gonna bother checking, but why don't you @Goldie look up what songs were #1 on the R&B charts in 1986/87 and tell the message board which songs you'd play at a party that would get everybody on the dance floor. Tell us which "hits" from 86/87 are considered "classics", songs that had a bigger impact than Eric B Is President & The Bridge Is Over.

It's your message board - show & prove!
