Welcome To aBlackWeb

When did rappers stop shouting out the year on record?

In 2000; but instead of shouting out the year like before, rappers started shouting out the year of the cars they were supposedly in.

Because it sounds dated asf in the future.

"Cashmoney taking over for the 99 and 2000" in 2024 don't hit the same. Lol
was this the last time a big song mentioned the year?

edit* Dmx "this be the only joint that'll knock till 2003"

99/2000 is dated. You want to do the math? Lol I'm not saying the actual song don't hit the same...

BTAU is a timeless song and forever in my top 20. They took off that part in the album anyway.

They didn't take off that part cuz the album version never had

It was added it to the radio version

threadstarter has a point.tbh saying the year might have been the trendy thing to do back then that trended out...on top of saying ninety whatever spunds better than oh ..2..3....oh eleven
.naw

I'm still rolling at the notion that the year dates the song

No shit

The sound of music today sounds nothing like Rappers delight but that doesn't mean rappers delight can't get played in a set in the right kinda environment

I agree with the first part, but you chose the wrong line as an example. it's a cool line and the fact that they did take over helps it.
Folks misunderstood what I was saying. It doesn't hurt the song at all. I just meant it takes you back to a specific era. Maybe dated was the wrong word.

It was an iconic line in hiphop at the time because Cashmoney was going through the start of their legendary run.. Growing up I copped every CMR album ever released bad or good.

At a certain point, niggas realized how powerful the art form was. The goal went from making music to document what you saw out your window and what was happening around you...to the goal being making timeless music that people can listen to forever.

Thus...no more shouting out the year.

Bruh, you dead in the water

It always cracked me up when Joell Ortiz said "I'm PS4 in HD and the screen is plasma/ You're Atari 2600 with a weak adapter/"

Like the PS3 had just come out, so he's saying he's ahead of his time.....but shouldn't you know a PS4 isn't gonna be "futuristic" in 5 years?

They don't even make plasma TVs no more lol.
