To pile on to the topic, a person is not reading all day.
An email, a text message, the menu, and tweets.

All of these sectors are 2 to 3 sentences long.

Less than 2% of a person week is reading...unless you are an avid reader.

Day to day thing.

I'm reading from before I start work until I get off work and beyond. You kinda can't get around it being a Linux/Unix systems engineer. Even Windows niggas gotta read all day.

When I was in the mortgage industry I read prolly from the time I got up in the morning until going to bed. Gotta read rate sheets, applications, approval conditions, etc all day long.

My sister is a guidance counselor and instructor at a university, literally reading all damned day.
Moms and stepfather are a minister and retired pastor, respectively, and both of them still preach. Reading pretty much all day is essential.
My eldest daughter's husband works a CSR job from home. He's reading shit all day.

I can keep going, but you'd be surprised at how much reading the average person does in their jobs every day.

For all that, you're reading this thread.

I'm leaving it at this.... For today.

If you have a manual labor or a field specific trade skill working in that field... Being able to read is 100% preferred... But if you are performing at a high level., and with around the right people.... Not essential.

Y'all rest up. I'll be back tomorrow

40% of this thread is Du

21% of adults are illiterate in the US. Not all of them are failing at life.

I had a high school history teacher tell us that his brother or brother in-law couldn't read. He had a wife and was doing good for himself. I dont remember what his occupation was.

A few months ago, I saw an interview with a older guy (he maybe was 40 yrs old), he got through life without knowing how to read. It wasnt easy. His wife helped him.

Depending on your occupation and people in your life, you can get by without reading. It ain't easy though

Nah, I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am sticking to my opinion that the average person isn't doing much reading, outside of tweets, and emails which are minimum sentences.

Niggas not scrolling through pages of material all day reading during their work shifts, I know niggas who work the graveyard/night shifts not reading on the average, other than emails or tweets.

Outside of maybe teachers, who have to read over plans, grading papers, in my opinion, the average person aint reading all day, outside of tweets, and emails, IG shit in my opinion.

Niggas don't even read the shit that they're supposed to read, like terms and conditions. Niggas don't even read their bank statements (Not you)

When you really get down to it, this is really a sad conversation to have. You honestly need both skills to survive in today's world. Yes, you can get by without one or both skills. But deep down, is that something you really want to do.

And what level of math we talking? Like I’m probably not on a college level with math. But niggas gotta at least know order of operations

Du is not entirely wrong and I came in here to kinda present of some of his ideas but the question itself is pointless....its like choosing between walking and talking...youre handicapped regardless...

A person who cant read will always need some else to help get by in any civilized society...

not.having street smarts/commom sense/logic will prevent one from getting far in life
