OPINION What Year Did Rap Stop Being “Good?”

Mainstream rap got bad when snap hit (2006), cuz that's all that was pushed through the airwaves. Good rap was still being made if you looked for it, but it could be found. Mixtapes (rip Datpiff) kept the good stuff alive until streaming became the PRIMARY source of music consumption. Artists started chasing that viral moment. If I had to give a year for that, I would say 2012 was the last year that rap was really as a whole considered good.

I don't know the year but people (5th) like to say the ring tone era cause of artists from the South started it but maybe it was when the niggas in the background wanted to start being in front of the camera and started trying to rap
I agree with this and to expand on it a bit it was when all the main rappers start getting their own little side "labels" and start putting on their mans and them.

maybe 2019 or 20....

actually looking back at the years it was at least 2 or 3 mainstream artist that put out projects I actually liked or at the very least rocked with some of the songs

I remember back in the early 90s we thought there was a dry spell before Nov 93 when Doggystyle, 36 Chambers and Midnight Marauders dropped. Then things picked up in the spring of 94 when Illmatic came out.

All that is to say maybe something big is around the corner.

Not sure of the date but its been more of a recent drop off for me... Prolly when drill got more mainstream....

Even when snap, ringtone and corny sh!t started becoming mainstream there were still loads of dope underground rap and a few dope commercial hits inbetween...

Now even underground rap is getting played out, so you know things are bad...

Not sure of the year but when mumble rap became popular

This..

Once the dope fiends started slurring their words and just rapping one quick line with a bs hook and its repeated over and over for the whole duration of the 2 min song but with a fire beat I went back to listen to 90s shit like one of my homies calls it when he tries to put me on something new I play 30 seconds and

..right back to playing Better Dayz or Hell on Earth lol.

The feature era. And by that, I mean every album that comes out over the past years are full of features including featured producers and so many are skippable and they lack cohesion.

2022 or 2023. I'm more invested in listening to podcasts than music nowadays. I be updating the weekly drops in here but for the most part, I'm not listening to 99% of the shit I post in here lol

Because you listen to same 5 to 10 mainstream artists. No wonder you don't like music. Expand your mind nigga.
