Morpheus now is another very complex character and very distinctive. Here's a man who bears the weight of human kind on his shoulders in his quest to locate "The One". He believed it so much he didn't care for what the Oracle had to say to Neo and he was willing to die for it. Laurence had to become the personification of belief and literally walking entirely by faith. What's beautiful is that he has his faith shattered when Neo completes his mission with the keymaker but then the war doesn't end and still Morpheus must then stake his entire belief in a man who has to go on a suicide mission with Trinity to save the very same civilization he was entrusted to save and he doesn't even go with them. From the emotions, to the action to the look of the character, I cannot imagine any other actor in Hollywood who could have played Morpheus. What's crazy is Morpheus' intelligence, the character is supposed to be a guide for Neo and almost all-knowing in that Neo has to be able to ask him questions and hope he has the answers and at times Morpheus honestly yet confidently says when he is unsure but that unwavering faith he always falls back on.
We don't even know what his religion is or what he truly believes outside of the prophecy he holds dear. He's very interesting in how multifaceted he is. We know very little about his past other than his relationship with Naomi. Good characters I think are the ones who have a degree of detachment and mystery to where the audience creates more than there is. This is why I feel the many characters Johnny Depp or Gary Oldman play are so beloved.
