Japan has a military but they aren't allowed offensive capabilities, and they aren't allowed to declare war since they were aggressors in WW2 and the United States rebuilt their country from the ground up after the bomb. USA installed military bases there to "defend" Japan.

So yeah, Japan is owned by the United States as much as a country can be owned by another country and have a first-world economy and way of life.
