The film industry has just been hit with one of the biggest shakeups in recent history. Warner Bros., one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, is heading to streaming. The studio announced on Thursday that its entire 2021 film slate will be heading for a premiere on the HBO Max streaming service. The move comes in the wake of theaters remaining closed and/or producing small box office numbers throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” WarnerMedia chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff said in a statement. “No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021.”

“With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films,” she continued. “We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”

This story is developing. More to come...

This is fucking epic.

Mortal Kombat

Dune
Matrix 4

so many others. A lot i wish id be able to watch in theaters, but its also great that they will be getting a release finally and they wont be held on to like all the other studios are doing.

Warner Bros. has the following films included on its 2021 slate for now (release dates could change, of course): “The Little Things,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Tom & Jerry,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” “In The Heights,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “The Suicide Squad,” “Reminiscence,” “Malignant,” “Dune,” “The Many Saints of Newark,” “King Richard,” “Cry Macho,” and “Matrix 4.”

As far as pushbacks I imagine they still might. Like Dune. That movie looks like it has a pretty massive budget and Im not entirely sure how releasing a movie for free on streaming will help them profit from investing in the film unless they are going with the hopes of getting loads of new subscribers. That would need to be a TON of subscribers though.

Then again maybe people would give up netflix/hulu to subscribe for a couple months.

Good. Took them long enough to come to their senses with WW84.

It’s gonna be like one remaining theater chain remaining, if that, when COVID finally blows over

If Disney does this for the MCU and future Star Wars movies it's a wrap for movie theaters

shit it’s a wrap for them now
but this is all temporary. theaters will open back up eventually once shit gets back to “normal”

these blockbusters cost $200-300 million to make and i don’t think streaming subscriptions bring the same return on investment like the box office would
