Verzuz: Gladys Knight vs Patti LaBelle

You're crazy!

Gladys Knight been around since the early 60s. You and I might not know all of her hits, but I bet our parents and grandparents know them.

Here's a list of all of her albums

That's 32 albums. And you think she only has "5 songs and then she's done". SMH

What does that mean?? You can put out 100 albums but if the music don’t hit it don’t hit. I know a lot of Temptations, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick songs and all of them were out in Gladys era. I stand by what I said. Gladys a legend an all but she got 5 songs and she done. Pattie is gonna Rocky Balboa her and them damn pips!

Just to be clear, I'm not a Gladys Knight stan, and I'm not caping for her, but she had a lot of hits in the 70s. Look how many songs made the R&B top 10

She had 21 songs that made the R&B top 10, and there's a few more in the early 60s and 80s.

And you said she, "only has 5 songs and she's done"

Now that I think about it, I'm going to make a Gladys Knight Playlist

How many of t hose are still known and would still excite people today though? Just look at today's era. There are a lot of songs that made it high on the charts and were basically forgotten a year later. Not saying that's the case with Gladys, but looking at that list, I don't think too many of those songs really stood the test of time.

Well, Gladys Knight & The Pips have 7 Grammy Awards and Patti Labelle has two.

And Gladys Knight sang the National Anthem at the Superbowl, something Pattie Labelle has never done.

I'm not saying that Gladys Knight is better than Patti Labelle, but it's a lot closer than ya'll are making it out to be

I think most of us are going by longevity. Like I said before, Gladys and Patti on the same level for sure, but I think Patti has more songs that are still get spins today.

:wdf5: .....DF that gotta do w/ anything Monk said.

OK, I see that I'm going to have to go slow and explain this to you.

Monk said, "How many of t hose are still known and would still excite people today though? Just look at today's era. Not saying that's the case with Gladys, but looking at that list, I don't think too many of those songs really stood the test of time."

My response was that she won 7 Grammy awards.

Here's how the seven Grammy awards are relevant to what Monk said; Songs that win a Grammy award are celebrated more than songs that don't win Grammy awards. In fact, that's one of the basic measurements of success in the music industry next to record sales.

The question remains; by what metric is Patti Labelle better than Gladys Knight?

So you just doubled down on your moronic response.

And winning a Grammy doesn't make a song memorable or stand the test of time

This is one of the most recognizable songs of all time in ANY genre..

ZERO Grammy's.

And there's many more.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove, or what we're arguing about, but if your premise is that sometimes popular songs don't win Grammys, I agree with you. And if your premise is that My Girl deserved a Grammy, I agree with you. I'm sure you could list 100 dope songs that we all like, that didn't win Grammy awards. In fact, I'll help you make that list if you need some help.

But my point is that Gladys Knight has 21 top 10 R&B hits, 7 Grammy awards, and she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Those are tangible, quantifiable accolades.

Ibex said, "Gladys Knight has 5 songs and she's done.

My point is that her catalog is much deeper than 5 songs. Maybe if you grew up in the 90s or 00s you wouldn't remember them, but I grew up in the 80s, the tail end of her reign and I remember a handful of songs by her and Patti Labelle.
