Iranian materials scientists are working on improving concrete even further. Mahmoud Nili of Bu-Ali Sina University in Hamadan is using polypropylene fibres and quartz flour (known as fume) in his mix, which supposedly give his concrete the ability to absorb heavier blows than the regular stuff.

Ali Nazari and his colleagues at Islamic Azad University in Save are experimenting with metal-oxide nanoparticles -- using oxides of iron, aluminium, zirconium, titanium and copper. So far, their work has only been demonstrated in small samples, but if it can scale up to larger quantities then it may be possible to produce concrete four times stronger than the strongest existing commercial concrete mixes
