The Bagram Air Base was originally built by the Soviet Union in the 1950s during the Cold War. While the Soviets constructed the initial airfield, the United States significantly expanded and modernized it after 2001, transforming it into the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan.
The base, located about 40 kilometers north of Kabul, began as a Soviet project when Afghanistan sought Moscow's support in the early 1950s.
The original 3,000-meter runway was constructed in 1976, and the base served as a key hub for Soviet military operations during the Soviet–Afghan War in the 1980s.
After the U.S. invasion in 2001, American forces overhauled the facility, including building a second, longer runway capable of handling large military aircraft like the C-5 Galaxy.
Although some sources incorrectly claim the U.S. built the base, the consensus across multiple reliable references is that the Soviets were the original builders, with the U.S. later enhancing its infrastructure.
