COMMUNITY United States Politics Thread: Trump's Second Term

Why u got to set term limits like they do the presidency
I was going to say, passing legislation to ban trading while in office has about as much a chance of passing as legislation on term limits. Nothing that keeps them from power and money will get passed by either side. And those that are for it probably don’t know how to play the game yet.

arent there things that can take it out of their hands? Like ballot initiatives? Folks vote for it and whichever option wins the popular vote goes into place?

FYI...if you want to get some wealth follow Pelosi's trades.

Her trading record is one of the greatest ever..she should probably be in prison for insider trading.
I remember a while back I think it was either @DOS_patos or @ChicagoFigure that posted a site that showed all her recent trades. I could be mistaken but I think there was like a month delay or something though. Yall know anywhere we can see her up to date/recent plays? 👀

It’s a dude who created a site where u can monitor their reported trades almost in real time

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a nationwide ballot initiative. I’ve only seen it by state. That would be a good place to start though to get the ball rolling.

Could a state say a politician elected to federal office from their state has term limits? Like can NC make it so any politician elected in their state has term limits on their federal office?

The one good thing about Trump is the creativity he’s using to get things done, even if they’re illegal, lol.

damn.. looks like that wouldnt apply.. lol I asked ChatGPT this what it came back with:

No, a state cannot set term limits for its U.S. Senators or Representatives through a ballot initiative (or any other method). This was decided in the 1995 Supreme Court case U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, where the Court ruled that states cannot impose additional qualifications, including term limits, on federal legislators beyond what is stated in the U.S. Constitution.

Why Not?

  • The Constitution sets the qualifications for U.S. House and Senate members (age, citizenship, residency) and does not include term limits.
  • The Supreme Court ruled that only a constitutional amendment can impose term limits on federal lawmakers, meaning states have no power to enforce such limits through their own laws or ballot initiatives.

What Could Be Done Instead?

  1. Amend the U.S. Constitution: Congress could propose a term limits amendment (which would need approval by two-thirds of both houses and ratification by three-fourths of the states).
  2. Convention of States: If two-thirds (34) of state legislatures call for a constitutional convention, they could propose a term limits amendment.
  3. Political Pressure: Voters can choose to elect candidates who pledge to self-impose term limits.

Damn. The easiest route would be to have 34 states call for a constitutional convention, but that could only happen with all Trump states (31) and a few Kamala states (19) based on the 2024 election.
