Oregon was or still is like that. Was heading uo to Seattle from Cali. Didn’t know it was a thing there too, pulled up probably around 3am no attendant in sight or any signs indicating it, pumped my own gas suddenly an attendant appeared talking bout thats illegal I said cool call them folks if you want to, but I’m more then capable of …PAUSE…pumping my own shit like every other state I've driven through.

Nah, it's just NJ left on that shit. Makes no sense either. I was pumping gas for my moms back in the late 70's. In those days you had a choice between full service and self service. Paid a lil extra per gallon for full service too. I remember the attendants would come out with a thick ass knot and a change maker on his belt like this:
