Netflix The Social Dilemma

Rubato

it only matters to us
A few of y’all said you had seen this one, and to me it feels like a big enough discussion to warrant its own thread.

Do y’all buy that AI built into social media is the primary reason that shit has gotten so disgustingly polarized? Is there a solution? I just felt kinda helpless after watching, but it seems like we’re fucked...

It was cool I watched it yesterday

I feel like the longer it went the less engaging it was

Greg from everybody hates Chris 27 acting like a HS kid I didn’t need that much of

I’m like we get it

Yea it did start to get repetitive about 2/3 of the way in

Like I didn’t see the last 25 mins but I didn’t feel the need to go back and watch

It would take me out of it when they went away from Tristan I forgot his last name but the ginger guy and go to Greg being a man in high school

The scenes of the family shoulda been condensed to like min and a half of clips for like a total of like 9 mins just to give examples of what social media is doing and the rest shoulda been from the tech people

Of course I believe it. I don't think there is a 'solution', in the classic sense of the word. There ain't no going back. All we can do now is limit the harmfulness. And that starts by being AWARE of the shit. I been deleted my FB, never had a snapchat or a tiktok or Pinterest or whatever else. I got an IG, that I almost exclusively use to lurk, but rarely post...and Twitter, which is my go to social media.

And even with that setup, I be finding myself reaching for my phone on auto-pilot, to check twitter...for no reason at all. But I try to notice it when it happens and be aware that my behavior is the end result of focus groups and algorithms and A.I., etc, all working together to make me do something. When you realize that, it makes it easier to shift in the other direction and not do whatever it is they want you to do, even if it's just out of spite. Lol.

i gotta check myself every now and then about it

I have an addictive personality and low impulse control....they pretty much made this shit for me

thats all a part of why I gotta leave here sometimes, why I deactivate fb sometimes, and why I gotta stay my ass out the candy shop and shit like that

I been ruined since like 2001

(didnt watch this doc)

I quit maintaining a personal FB and Twitter back in 2013

I was in middle school when I first got on social media but I can’t imagine a life where that shit was available at 9. On a certain level idk how these kids even have a shot at developing self esteem.

Naw, see I was joking about age in that other thread. But THIS is where it really makes a difference. Cuz you right, I couldn't imagine getting on social media at 9. But I also couldn't imagine getting on it in middle school either. I'd think THAT would be worse. That's literally the most impressionable, least self-confident time in your life, for most people.

I grew up 100% without social media. I got on collegeclub when I was in college and I got on myspace when I was about 21. If social media was around when I was a kid, I couldn't even imagine.

We started on blog sites like Xanga then moved to MySpace

All I remember from those days was tryna get my page layout and music exactly how I wanted, it seemed like everything else was kinda secondary

I was on Fb when it first drop when you needed a edu. Over the years I went from posting and uploading pics to barely posting anything. IG I only use for my photography and the rest of them shit I don’t use.

Some ppl who I thought was cool got even more annoying on social media, like their whole life revolve around posting shit for likes to feed their narcissistic egos. Every few month I just be unfollowing people

You think someone with an agenda is steering us to certain topics and ideas? I can see them trying

I think we definitely saw those things play out on the ic. Not exactly sure about here.

But I'm more so asking where does abw stand in terms of how it impacts us pertaining to the issues brought up in the doc.

I saw the doc Sunday and it definitely speaks truth when talking about how not getting likes/rt's fucks with people. You can see the transition in the shit they do/say to try and get more engagement.

The biggest part to me though was when they talked about how your internet experience really just becomes an echo chamber for shit you agree with. I've said for a while now when people say shit like "do your own research" or brag about not following biased media they don't realize what they consume is just as biased and they're just as easily influenced
