White House Bans Staffers From Using Personal Phones At Work
White House staffers will no longer be able to use their personal cellphones at work starting Friday, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday and the White House confirmed on Thursday.

The ban was enacted by chief of staff John Kelly, Bloomberg reported. In a statement shared with TPM, the White House said the ban was put in place for security reasons. One unnamed aide told Bloomberg that there were too many devices connected to the White House WiFi and officials were concerned that personal phones weren’t as secure as government phones.

“The security and integrity of the technology systems at the White House is a top priority for the Trump administration and therefore the use of all personal devices for both guests and staff will no longer be allowed in the West Wing,” the White House said in its statement. “Staff will be able to conduct business on their government-issued devices and continue working hard on behalf of the American people.”

While the President has consistently complained about his White House’s penchant for leaking information to the press, an aide told Bloomberg that the ban was not put in place because of leaks.

In October, MSNBC reported that the Secret Service was planning to ban the use of personal cellphones in the West Wing, citing security concerns. That report came amid news that John Kelly and White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s personal cell phones had been compromised potentially as early as December 2016.

Bannon Reportedly Rips Ivanka in Book Excerpt: ‘Dumb as a Brick’

In comments published today, Steve Bannon has absolutely slammed President Donald Trump‘s son and son-in-law. Now, the former White House chief strategist is on record blasting another member of the first family.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bannon made a scathing comment about Ivanka Trump‘s intellect. The comment, like all the others which have been the talk of Washington on Wednesday, is part of Michael Wolff‘s explosive, yet-to-be-published tome on the Trump White House:

From the Journal’s report (which is located at this link, but mostly hidden behind a paywall):

In the book, Mr. Bannon is quoted as describing Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and a White House adviser, as “dumb as a brick.” A spokeswoman for Ms. Trump didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Bannon declined to comment. A person close to him said Mr. Bannon didn’t deny his quotes in the book.

Report: DOJ Taking Yet Another Look At Hillary Clinton’s Private Email Server
The Department of Justice is taking yet another look at former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while in office, the Daily Beast reported on Thursday.

Citing an unnamed “ally” of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Daily Beast reported that the Department of Justice plans to examine how much classified information passed through the server, who was responsible for removing that information from a classified environment, which enforcement entities knew about these matters and when.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Clinton of lying about her use of the server. He has also claimed that the investigation into Clinton’s server—overseen by former FBI director James Comey (who Trump fired in May 2017)—was “rigged.”

Comey in July 2016 said Clinton’s use of a private email server was “careless” but said Clinton and her staff engaged in no “intentional misconduct,” and announced that the FBI would not recommend criminal charges against her.

In October 2016, Trump threatened to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton’s server use again if he won the election.

“If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation,” he said during the second presidential debate.

“It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Clinton replied.

“Because you’d be in jail,” Trump fired back.

Trump has also accused Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin of “disregarding basic security protocols” and recommended “jail!”

A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment to the Daily Beast.

Trump Pushes Voter ID After Disbanding Bogus Voter Fraud Commission
After announcing he was dissolving his bogus voter fraud committee to avoid tumultuous legal battles, President Donald Trump on Thursday promoted what he said was the need for voter ID laws.

“System is rigged, must go to Voter I.D.,” Trump tweeted. “As Americans, you need identification, sometimes in a very strong and accurate form, for almost everything you do … except when it comes to the most important thing, VOTING for the people that run your country.”

Trump’s message runs counter to the emphasis of the voter fraud commission, which has emphasized the need to purge voter rolls over voter ID laws.

Trump also tweeted that it was “mostly Democratic states” that refused to share voter data because “they know that many people are voting illegally.”

Trump issued an executive order Wednesday evening, effectively dissolving his Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. In a statement, he said he made the decision because he wanted to avoid “endless legal battles at taxpayer expense.” The commission is facing numerous lawsuits from civil rights and privacy groups who complain the panel is being used to push for voting restrictions and that the data requests violate privacy laws.

A large swath of states repeatedly rejected the commission’s requests for voter data. The commission initially asked states for information like addresses, military status and the last four digits of voters’ Social Security numbers. The commission later requested publicly available voter data, but many Democratic and Republican-majority states continued to refuse.

Trump Reportedly Nicknamed Bannon ‘Bam Bam’ After Domestic Abuse Allegations Surfaced

Politico’s Eliana Johnson reported an unsettling statement from PresidentTrump, when he reacted to a disturbing story from former chief strategist Steve Bannon’s past.

When Bannon became CEO of the Trump campaign back in 2016, there were a lot of reports and profiles about his strange, nomadic lifestyle before he took the helm at Breitbart. One aspect of Bannon’s past that received attention was a lawsuit his ex-wife filed against him for domestic violence and battery.

Here’s how Politico previously reported on the charges:

The Santa Monica, Calif., police report says that Bannon’s then-wife claimed he pulled at her neck and wrist during an altercation over their finances, and an officer reported witnessing red marks on her neck and wrist to bolster her account. Bannon also reportedly smashed the phone when she tried to call the police.

The case against Bannon was dropped when his ex-wife didn’t show up to court, and the controversial chapter had no impact on his position within the Trump campaign. As Michael Wolff’s book continues to fuel the newfound animosity between Trump and Bannon, reporter Eliana Johnson tweeted this account of what the future-president thought when he found out about Bannon’s alleged actions

Steve Bannon Reportedly Lost Financial Support of Mercer After Touting Presidential Ambitions

Steve Bannon lost the support of Rebekah Mercer, the GOP megadonor and part-owner of Breitbart, after crowing about his presidential ambitions, according to a Washington Post report.

The WaPo report, which came in the wake of Michael Wolff’s new book on the Trump White House — of which excerpts dropped like bombs on Wednesday — detailed President Donald Trump’s scathing response to Bannon’s quotes in the book, as well as the cease and desist letter the president sent to his former chief strategist.

Buried in the report, however, is a revealing piece of information:

Bannon has in recent weeks also alienated his main financial backer, Rebekah Mercer,” WaPo reports, “after he told several other major conservative donors that he would be able to count on the Mercers’ financial support should he run for president, a person familiar with the conversations said.”

“The person said Mercer now does not plan to financially support Bannon’s future projects — and that she was frustrated by his moves in Alabama and some of his comments in the news media that seemed to stoke unnecessary fights.”

Though Bannon has repeatedly denied he intends to run for president, many reports have indicated otherwise.

Axios reported, on Thursday morning, that “Bannon has also told friends he’d run for president in 2020 if Trump does not,” and has even floated plots to primary Vice President Mike Pence.

This isn’t the first time the Mercer family has sought to distance themselves from Bannon. After Buzzfeed released a report in October detailing how Breitbartworked to water down racist and white supremacist rhetoric to make it more palatable to a wider audience, Robert Mercer — Rebekah’s father — announced he was selling his stake in Bannon’s website, citing differences in their ideologies.

The buyers? His daughters, including Rebekah.

Peter Thiel Reportedly Looking into Launching Competitor to Fox News

Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel is reportedly looking into launching a cable news network that would act as a rival to Fox News. The project has reportedly been in motion for months, according to Buzzfeed.

Thiel — who helped drive Gawker out of businessby backing wrestler Hulk Hogan‘s lawsuit against the site — was reportedly working with ex-CEO of Fox News Roger Ailes to create the conservative channel. Ailes resigned from Fox after repeated and longstanding allegations of sexual harassment emerged, but not before helping conservative commenters like Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly rise to prominence.

News of Thiel’s plans reportedly first emerged as part of journalist Michael Wolff’s new book “Fire and Fury: Inside Trump’s White House.”
Excerpts includes a damning account of Trump’s first days following his election victory in fall of 2016 that was widely read and talked about throughout the day.

It is worth noting that Thiel is an ardent Trump campaign contributor and supporter who has used his PayPal and Facebook wealth to fund Hogan’s lawsuit. In 2016 the businessman spoke at the RNC convention where he spoke in support of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Thiel plans to use some of his own money and funds from the conservative Mercer family. The Mercers have used their vast hedge fund capital to influence political campaigns and to finance Breitbart.

Trump Reportedly Told Hope Hicks: ‘You’re the Best Piece of Tail’ Corey Lewandowski ‘Will Ever Have’

The wildest (most effective?) day of book promotion continues, as yet another explosive revelation from Michael Wolff‘s soon-to-be-published opus on President Donald Trump‘s White House is making the rounds.

In an excerpt reported by MSNBC, White House communications director Hope Hicks was said to be in conversation with the president and his sons at Trump Tower — reportedly worried about the treatment that former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was receiving from the media. Hicks apparently wondered aloud how she might be able to help the embattled Lewandowski.

“You’ve already done enough for him,” the president reportedly said. “You’re the best piece of tail he’ll ever have.”

The comment was apparently a reference to a romantic relationship in which Hicks and Lewandowski were long rumored to have engaged. According to author Wolff, Trump’s comment sent Hicks running from the room.

Wolff wrote that Trump “otherwise seemed to treat Hicks in a protective and even paternal way.” But this comment obviously didn’t fall into either of those categories.

GOP Donor Mercer: My Family Doesn’t Back Bannon’s ‘Recent Actions’ – Talking Points Memo

Conservative megadonor Rebekah Mercer on Thursday said her family does not support former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon’s “recent actions and statements,” a rare but blunt rebuke of her former associate.

“My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements,” Mercer said in a statement to the Washington Post.

Mercer, who helped finance and advise President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, said she supports “President Trump and the platform upon which he was elected.”

Mercer and her father Robert Mercer are part owners of Breitbart News, the conservative news organization where Bannon served as chairman before joining Trump’s campaign and where he returned to his position after leaving the White House.

Bannon allegedly accused Donald Trump Jr., the President’s eldest son, of being “treasonous” and “unpatriotic,” the Guardian reported on Wednesday, citing journalist Michael Wolff’s upcoming book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing an unnamed source familiar with conversations between members of Breitbart’s board, that the Mercers and other members were discussing whether to give Bannon the boot after Wolff’s reporting on his alleged remarks.

The Washington Post also reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with Breitbart News, that discussions have begun there about the possibility of removing Bannon from the role.

Mercer told the Washington Post that she is still committed to supporting the right-wing news organization, though it was not clear from the report whether that support extended to Bannon.

In another report published Thursday, the Washington Post cited an unnamed source familiar with Bannon’s exchanges who said Bannon had alienated Mercer by telling other conservative donors that he was certain she would support him if he decided to run for president.

The White House on Thursday appeared to encourage Breitbart News to consider the possibility of ousting its chairman.

“I certainly think that it’s something they should look at and consider,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at her daily briefing.
