City Council Of Charlotte, Host Of 2020 GOP Convention, Votes To Condemn Trump

The Charlotte City Council voted Monday to condemn President Donald Trump’s “racist and xenophobic comments” about the squad, a notable move from the leadership of the city that will play host to the 2020 Republican convention.

The vote was split along party lines, according to the Washington Post.

A Charlotte Observer reporter snapped a picture of the resolution:

The document “acknowledges that many of the City’s residents are immigrants and/or people of color” and “condemns all hate speech, bigotry, racism, and discrimination, wherever it may occur, especially from the highest levels of government.”

DOJ Formally Instructs Mueller To Limit His Upcoming Congressional Testimony

While special counsel Robert Mueller has already made the scope of his testimony publicly clear, the Justice Department officially instructed the special counsel to not speak about the Russia probe beyond what is in his report.

Associate Deputy Attorney General Bradley Weinsheimer told Mueller in a letter Monday that his testimony before two House committees on Wednesday should “remain within the boundaries of your public report because matters within the scope of your investigation were covered by executive privilege,” the letter said.

“These privileges would include discussion about investigative steps or decisions made during your investigation not otherwise described in the public version of your report,” it said.

Democrats are expected to press Mueller to expand on examples of Trump’s behavior, including apparent attempts to obstruct justice.

Trump Administration Plans On Kicking About 3 Million People Off Food Benefits

President Donald Trump’s administration’s planned cuts to food assistance benefits would throw millions of people off the program.

The Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that it would be closing a “loophole” in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program that allows recipients to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

According to CNN, the move could end up kicking more than 3 million people off the program.

The administration claims the loophole allows people to get assistance “when they clearly don’t need it.”

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said in a statement that states have “misused this flexibility without restraint.”

“The American people expect their government to be fair, efficient, and to have integrity – just as they do in their own homes, businesses, and communities,” Perdue said. “That is why we are changing the rules, preventing abuse of a critical safety net system, so those who need food assistance the most are the only ones who receive it.”

The administration claims the proposal will move participants “towards self-sufficiency,” a common refrain among Republicans when citing reasons for slashing security net benefits.

Wray: ‘Majority’ Of Domestic Terror Arrests This Year Motivated By White Supremacy

FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers on Tuesday that the majority of the arrests his team has made this year related to domestic terrorism have been motivated by white supremacist ideology.

“In terms of the number of arrests, we have through the third quarter of this fiscal year, we had about 100 arrests on the international terrorism side, which includes the homegrown violent terrorism,” he told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. “But we’ve also had just about the same number, again, don’t quote me to the exact digit, but on the domestic terrorism side and I will say, that a majority of the domestic terrorism cases that we’ve investigated, are motivated by some version of what you might call white supremacist violence, it includes other things as well.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) called the numbers “significant” in light of the ongoing dialogue about race in the U.S. following President Trump’s racist attacks on four congresswomen of color over the last several days.

“I think this is significant,” Durbin said. “I do not not want to diminish the work you’re doing when it comes to homegrown domestic terrorism … But what you have just said is significant, if the number of people arrested this calendar year when it comes to this extremist conduct, is about equal between those who were inspired by foreign actors, ISIS, al-Qaeda, whatever it might be, and those who were inspired by white supremacy or at least some version of race.”

Durbin added: “We are having a national conversation about race that we haven’t had in a long time — about racism and the reaction, what is acceptable and what is not.”When Durbin asked if the two could be considered equal threats, Wray said no, calling homegrown violent terrorism the single biggest threat to the U.S.

Trump Claims Article 2 Gives Him ‘The Right To Do Whatever I Want As President’

President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that Article 2 in the Constitution gives him carte blanche to do anything he wants.

Trump was giving a speech at a Turning Point USA conference, where he predictably veered off into a tirade about special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and how, as president, Trump could’ve stopped it.

“I have an Article 2 where I have the right to do whatever I want as president,” Trump said. “But I don’t even talk about that because they did a report and there was no obstruction.”

Nothing about Article 2 says the President can legally do whatever they want, let alone fire an independent counsel at will, but it’s not the first time Trump’s made such dubious claims.

During an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos last month, Trump cited Article 2 as the reason why presidents can’t be charged with obstruction of justice.

Additionally, Mueller’s report didn’t say Trump never attempted to obstruct justice. In fact, he found multiple instances of the President trying to mess with his investigation, but he chose to follow Justice Department guidelines on not indicting a sitting president.
