MLK’s Son Shuts Down Pence: My Father Was A ‘Bridge Builder, Not A Wall Builder’

Martin Luther King Jr.’s son doesn’t appreciate Vice President Mike Pence comparing his father’s civil rights activism to President Donald Trump’s attempt to build a border wall.

Martin Luther King III on Monday responded to Pence’s Face the Nation interview, during which the VP used a quote from MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech to make a case for Trump’s wall.

“Martin Luther King Jr was a bridge builder, not a wall builder,” said King, according to Atlantic writer Edward-Isaac Dovere. “Martin Luther King Jr. would say, ‘Love, not hate, will make America great.'”

During his interview, Pence repeated MLK’s quote “Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy” and declared that’s “exactly” what Trump was doing by demanding $5.7 billion for his unpopular border wall.

King himself later tweeted a Hill report on his comments, thus confirming his response.

‘Trump Slump’: Gun Sales Down In Shifting Political Climate

When gunmakers and dealers gather this week in Las Vegas for the industry’s largest annual conference, they will be grappling with slumping sales and a shift in politics that many didn’t envision two years ago when gun-friendly Donald Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress took office.

Some of the top priorities for the industry — expanding the reach of concealed carry permits and easing restrictions on so-called “silencers” — remain in limbo, and prospects for expanding gun rights are nil for the foreseeable future.

Instead, fueled by the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, the federal government banned bump stocks and newly in-charge U.S. House Democrats introduced legislation that would require background checks for virtually every firearm sale, regardless of whether it’s from a gun dealer or a private sale.

Even without Democrats’ gains in November’s midterm elections, the industry was facing a so-called “Trump slump,” a plummet in sales that happens amid gun rights-friendly administrations. Background checks were at an all-time high in 2016, President Barack Obama’s last full year in office, numbering more than 27.5 million; since then, background checks have been at about 25 million each year.

Gary Ramey, owner of Georgian gunmaker Honor Defense, says the mood at last year’s SHOT Show, which stands for Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade, was subdued. He’s expecting the same this year.

“There was no one to beat up. You didn’t have President Obama to put up in PowerPoint and say ‘He’s the best gun salesman, look what he’s doing to our country,'” he said.

“Numbers are down,” he added. “You can’t deny it.”

Robert J. Spitzer, chairman of political science at the State University of New York at Cortland and a longtime watcher of gun issues, said that not only have shifting politics made it difficult for the gun industry to gain ground but high-profile mass shootings — like the Las Vegas shooting that happened just miles from where the SHOT Show will be held and the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting — also cast a pall.

“After the Parkland shooting, (gun rights’ initiatives) were kind of frozen in their tracks,” Spitzer said. “Now there’s no chance that it’s going anywhere.”

It’s easier to drive up gun sales when there’s the threat or risk of gun-rights being restricted, he said. “It’s harder to rally people when your target is one house of Congress. It just doesn’t have the same galvanizing effect.”

The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s SHOT Show has been held annually for more than four decades. This year more than 60,000 will attend the event that runs Tuesday through Friday — from gun dealers and manufacturers to companies that cater to law enforcement. There’s a wait list for exhibitors that is several hundred names long and it will have some 13 miles of aisles featuring products from more than 1,700 companies.

Last year’s show in Las Vegas was held just months after a gunman killed 58 people and injured hundreds at an outdoor music festival. The massacre was carried out by a gunman armed with bump stocks, which allow the long guns to mimic fully automatic weapons.

Organizers last year restricted media access to trade journalists. This year’s show will again allow reporters from mainstream media to attend.

Gun-control advocates are rejoicing in the gun industry’s misfortunes of late and chalking it up to not just shifting attitudes among Americans but a shift in elected political leaders.

“Without a fake menace in the White House to gin up fears, gun sales have been in a Trump slump and, as a result, the NRA is on the rocks,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a group founded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Joe Bartozzi, the new president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said the industry isn’t disturbed by the drop in gun sales or the shift in federal politics. While Democrats who ran on gun-control platforms made huge gains in the House, he sees the Senate shifting to the other end of the spectrum.

“Having been in the industry for over 30 years and seeing the trends of gun sales ebb and flow over time, it’s very hard to put your finger on any one specific issue as to why this happens. It’s just the cyclical nature of the business,” he said.

Trump’s campaign was bolstered by about $30 million from the National Rifle Association and when he took office, the industry had hoped that a host of gun rights would be enacted. The Trump administration quickly nixed an Obama-imposed rule that made it more difficult for some disabled people to purchase and possess firearms.

But other industry priorities, such as reciprocity between states for carrying certain concealed firearms and a measure that would ease restrictions on purchasing suppressors that help muffle the sound when a gun is fired, failed to gain traction.

For now, Bartozzi said his organization is focused on a measure that would expand public gun ranges, funded by an existing tax on firearms and ammunition sales that supports conservation, safety programs and shooting ranges on public lands. The hope is that increasing the number of public ranges will encourage more people to become hunters.

House Democrats Set To Grill Wilbur Ross On Census

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee in March over the Trump administration’s controversial decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, the committee announced Tuesday.

Ross will be called to “provide complete and truthful answers to a wide range of questions, including questions regarding the ongoing preparations for the census, the addition of a citizenship question, and other topics” at the March 14 hearing, the committee announced Tuesday.

This announcement comes a week after a federal judge blocked the addition of the citizenship question, issuing a scathing 277-page ruling accusing Ross of violating the Administrative Procedure Act.

Critiquing Ross’ motivation for adding the question, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman said that the Commerce Secretary “failed to consider several important aspects of the problem; alternately ignored, cherry-picked, or badly misconstrued the evidence in the record before him; acted irrationally both in light of that evidence and his own stated decisional criteria; and failed to justify significant departures from past policies and practices — a veritable smorgasbord of classic, clear-cut APA violations.”

The Census Bureau had repeatedly advised Ross against adding the question, which immigrant and voting rights advocates warned would likely lead to an undercount of immigrant populations in the census.

Mystery Mueller Grand Jury Case Allowed To Appeal To SCOTUS

An unknown company owned by a foreign government can proceed in asking the Supreme Court to consider its appeal of a Mueller-linked grand jury subpoena, the court announced today.

The move will allow the unnamed firm – reportedly a financial institution – a chance at winning an appeal before the Supreme Court.

The mysterious company was ordered to file redacted versions of its court papers for the public record.

Little is known about the company in case in question. A contempt order issued by a lower court and upheld by SCOTUS is forcing the firm to pay a fine of $50,000 per day as long as it refuses to comply with the grand jury subpoena.

CNN reported on January 9 that the firm is represented by the law firm Alston & Bird.

WH: Sarah Sanders Will Hold A Briefing ‘When She Finds A Reason To Do That’

White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley said Tuesday that press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will deliver a press briefing … eventually.

In an interview with Gidley, a White House deputy press secretary, Fox News’ Sandra Smith noted that there hadn’t been a press briefing delivered from the White House briefing room yet this year.

“Is there any plans to start that back up again, or see Sarah Sanders back up at the podium?” Smith asked.

“She’s going to come back when she finds a reason to do that,” Gidley replied.

Smith pressed for specifics: “No definitive date on that?”

“It’s not that they’ve ever stopped,” Gidley asserted. “It’s just that sometimes we see a need to come to the podium and communicate things, and sometimes we don’t. A lot of the times when we don’t come to the podium, it’s because the President has addressed the American people himself.”

“I mean, he’s the most accessible president in history, and most of the media in this room will tell you that,” he added. “It doesn’t necessarily mean Sarah Sanders needs to be at this podium every day when the President himself is talking to the American people.”

Scott Jennings’ PR Firm Played Big Role In Phillips-Sandmann Spin

PR firm RunSwitch, co-run by adviser to Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Scott Jennings, has played a significant role in quelling the outrage over a video that at first appeared to show a MAGA hat-wearing teen disrespectfully crowding the space of and smirking at a Native American man.

The firm said in a statement that it “has been retained by the Sandmann family to offer professional counsel with what has become a national media story. We are working with the family to ensure an accurate recounting of events which occurred this past weekend,” according to the Louisville Courier Journal, where Jennings is a columnist. Jennings is also a contributor at CNN.

RunSwitch did not immediately elaborate on specifically how they have helped oversee coverage of the incident.

Extended video has muddied the story, as it backs up student Nick Sandmann’s claim that he was approached by Omaha elder Nathan Phillips, not the other way around.

China Grants Ivanka Trump 5 More Trademarks Amid Trade Negotiations

SHANGHAI (AP) — The Chinese government has granted Ivanka Trump’s company preliminary approval for another five trademarks this month, as her father’s administration pushes ahead on trade negotiations with China.

Four trademarks, including child care centers, sunglasses and wedding dresses, were approved on Sunday. A fifth, covering brokerage, charitable fundraising and art valuation services, was approved on Jan.6, according to online trademark office records. The applications were filed in 2016 and 2017. If no one objects, they will be finalized after 90 days.

Ivanka Trump’s expanding intellectual property holdings have long raised ethical concerns, particularly in China, where the courts and bureaucracy tend to reflect the will of the ruling Communist Party.

Ivanka Trump’s lawyers in China did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Critics argue that by asking a foreign government for valuable intellectual property rights, White House officials could open themselves to pressure in government negotiations. There is also concern that the family’s global trademark portfolio would open the way for lucrative business opportunities once Donald Trump leaves office.

“The sheer number of foreign trademarks Ivanka Trump has gotten while working in the White House would be troubling enough, but the fact that she just got one for charitable fundraising when her father’s namesake foundation — which she served as a board member for and is closing in scandal following a New York Attorney General investigation outlining numerous legal violations — is especially troubling,” Jordan Libowitz, a spokesman for watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said in an email.

Ivanka Trump closed her fashion brand in July. Her representatives assert that trademark filings are a normal business practice and are needed to protect her name from copycats seeking to capitalize on her fame.

Companies apply for trademarks for a range of reasons. They can be signs of corporate ambition, but many also are filed defensively, particularly in China, where trademark squatting is rampant.

China has said it treats all trademark applications equally under the law.
