Let's not forget, that when the universe was down to three and a half Saiyans, Vegeta literally killed 1 and planned to kill the other 1.5. Vegeta was a straight up bad guy for most of Z. He was committed to avenging the Saiyans and repping the concept of Saiyan pride, but he never really gave a fuck about the Saiyans themselves. That's another sign of his character change in Super. In Super, he actually connects the Saiyan pride to real people and cares about those real people instead of just the idea of what they represented.
