Manchester Derby #186

from a united's perspective:

Positives
  • Head to Head form: in the last 5 league games played between the two, Man United have won 3 and drawn 1. Ole is also the only manager to have beaten Guardiola more times (four) than he has lost to him (three) – with a 50% win rate over 8 meetings [min 4. Meetings]
  • League position: Man United are currently 5th, 3 pts behind City. A Win (unless by a substantial goal difference) keeps them 5th and narrows the gap with the top 3 without being overtaken in the league
  • Tactical Anomalies: Since the start of 2020, City have scored 151 league goals, but none against their Manchester rivals. United have kept clean sheets in all three league meetings since January 2020, and in four of the five meetings in all competitions. The more possession that City have had against United (>60%) the more that they’ve struggled i.e. 0 wins
  • United Players: Cristiano Ronaldo has scored eight goals in 16 appearances against teams managed by Guardiola, which is bettered only by Jamie Vardy's total of nine
  • City Players: Laporte is out (suspension) and Ferran Torres (injury). John Stones will come into the game having had limited playing time this season

Negatives
  • Form: City have won seven Premier League away games against United, the joint-most of any team at Old Trafford in Premier League history (also Liverpool with seven wins).
  • League position: Man United are currently 5th , with 4 teams behind them within 2 pts. A loss and subsequent wins for the other 4 teams (Arsenal, Wolves, Brighton, Spurs) could mean that they end the weekend at worst 9th but most likely 8th.
  • Ole at the wheel: A loss and win for Spurs this weekend, brings up the topic of Conte and puts further pressure on Ole but in particular the Man United for a failure in action to change managers to Conte when the opportunity was there
  • United Players: With no Pogba in midfield (suspension) and Varane in defence (injury). It is the former that’s of deeper concern. United have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 13 matches at Old Trafford, their longest such run since 1964.
  • City Players: Phil Foden has been directly involved in 14 goals in his past 16 Premier League away matches, scoring 11 and assisting three.
