The FA Cup

The FA Cup, originally called the Football Association Challenge Cup, is the oldest association football competition in the world, having been held since 1871-72.

The FA Cup is organized by and named after The Football Association (The FA), which is the governing body of English football and the oldest footballing association in the world.

Entry in the FA Cup is open to all teams who compete in the Premier League, the Football League, Steps 1-5 as well as selected teams from Step 6 of the FA National League System.

There are a total of 14 Rounds in the FA Cup; 6 Qualifying Rounds, followed by 6 "Proper" Rounds (Rounds 1-4, The Round of 16 and the Quarter-Finals), the Semi-Finals and the Final.

In the FA Cup, each tie is played as a single leg. If a match is drawn, there is a replay, usually at the ground of the team who were the Away Team for the first game.

Drawn replays are settled with Extra Time and Penalty Shootouts, although this was not the case until the 1990s. Replays, however, are no longer held for the Semi-Final or the Final of the FA Cup.

The FA Cup Final is usually held at Wembley the Saturday after the end of the Barclays Premier LeagueSeason in May.

Under exceptional circumstances however, the date of the final has been brought forward for the match to be played before the end of the Premier League.

This was done in 2012, for example, to allow the England National Football Team time to prepare for the European Championships.

The Football League Cup

The Football League Cup (currently The Capital One Cup) is a football competition organized by the Football League. It has been held annually since 1960-61.

Unlike the FA Cup, entry to the Football League Cup is restricted to only 92 Teams, constituted by the 20 Premier League Teams and the 72 Teams that make up the Football League Pyramid, inlcuding the Championship, League One and League Two.

The League Cup also offers only £100,000 of prize money to the eventual winners of the competition, in contrast to the £2 Million Prize money that winners receive for the FA Cup.

The League Cup is organized into seven rounds, such that only 32 Teams are left to remain by the Third Round.

Unlike the FA Cup, matches in the League Cup are single-legged but the winners in case of a draw are decided by extra-time and penalties.

The Semi-Finals of the League Cup are the sole exception to this rule, having been two-legged affairs since the competition first began.

In case of a tied score over the course of two legs, the Semi Final Winners are first decided by Extra-Time, then the Away Goals Rule and lastly a Penalty Shootout.

League Cup Fixtures appear earlier on in the domestic calendar (September) for Premier League Teams than the FA Cup, which starts for most Premier League Teams only in January.

The League Cup Final usually takes place at Wembley in the last week of February/first week of March.

The FA Cup is a prestigious cup, I think its the oldest competition in football??? IMO the Carabao Cup (league cup) which seems to change name all the time is good run out for the lower leagues teams and a chance for the youngsters and non starting 11 in the first team to get game time...
