It's similar to the reason why we have QWERTY keyboards instead of ABCDEF; to slow people down.

the layout for a calculator came first. People who used them all day were extremely fast at entering numbers on them. Supposedly the first touch tone phones had the same layout, but the tone recognition hardware was too slow to respond to those fast key presses. The designers flipped the keypad around in order to slow people down to a rate that the hardware could accommodate.

gotta remember that touch-tone phone systems came out in the 50's. The equipment that recognized the tones and translated it to something the phone system could use as well as the switching systems back then were largely analog and slow. When telcos changed to digital equipment around the late 60's/70's it got better, but you had over a decade of people using phones with transposed keypads so they just kept it.

The first mechanical typewriters couldn't handle the speed that people were able to accomplish with ABCDEF keyboards because the rods would get stuck together. QWERTY was the solution to slow them down and to space out commonly used letters so their rods weren't on the same side of the machine.
