COMMUNITY Tariffs: Supreme Court strikes down Trump’s sweeping tariffs

Plus China looks stronger because they didn’t cave. Trump came groveling to get a trade war cease fire. We’re basically back to square one. A good negotiator wouldn’t set fire to their own house to intimidate their adversary then put the fire out and claim victory. China didn’t suffer at all through this.

Plus the Chinese countered Trump’s victory argument with their official statement downplaying that it was a deal. Basically it’s an agreement on how to proceed, nothing agreed to on an actual trade deal.

Was China's tariff lowered or is it still the same as before?? I guess this is what I am asking

China lowered theirs from 125% to 10%. The US tariff on China is 30%. This is basically where the tariffs were before Trump raised China to 145% and China retaliated by raising theirs to 125%.

That means US importers are paying 30%+ on Chinese imports and Chinese importers are paying 10% on US imports. So in effect the US importers are being harmed more by this because the US is a net importer from China by a wide margin.

What were the US importers paying under Biden?? And what were the Chinese importers paying on US?

25% under Biden, which Trump implemented and he continued. I’m not sure what China had at first, but it was 10% or less most likely.

The difference though is the tariffs on other countries weren’t as high so companies had the option to move somewhere like Indonesia or India to avoid the tariffs. Now Indonesia has a 32% tariff.

What are you driving at? Maybe we can skip the back and forth and get to the crux of your inquiry.

This is all walmarts fault?

In the long run, it was the company’s globalizing to get the cheapest labor that did it. Government was also complicit through their inaction to protect US jobs.

Right now though, it’s all Trump. We’ve grown accustomed to certain prices at this point and capitalism demands company’s grow profits. Can’t put the tube back in the toothpaste.

Edit, Walmart wasn’t a manufacturer, but they were still complicit given they began purchasing those low cost products.
