I watched this video on IMDB and they guessed the American if it wasn't Hopper it was the head scientist from the 1st season. The reason they said that is due to the head orderly in season 2 telling 11 and her sister that he didn't die and he can help them find the guy. Which also makes sense because he could've been the person to tell the Russians about Hawkins having a gate that was opened before.

Pretty good theory

Loved the season and I think it might have been the best one out of the 3 like many have stated
