Cena was already calling out Rock when Rock inducted his family into the Hall of Fame. Rock gave him a light roast and it was all good, none of this supposed animosity was present on either side.

Cena was angling for a match cause that's the job, other guys were too but they weren't the top guy and Cena was. When Rock came back he agreed to 3 years and 5 matches. That Cena had been calling him out gave them and immediate hook to start building the match with. Which they did from Rocks very 1st return appearance. Had Cena not been running Rock down prior, they'd have no natural launch point to build from.

The layout to their feud was known from day 1. No one would need to be angry because it was always understood where they were going and what they were driving too. One hosting job. One tag match. Two singles matches at Mania. Cena had no reason to be mad about jobbing in the first match because he knew he was getting the win back before he even worked the first match. They booked Rock in Miami in his first Mania match in 9 years, Cena knew he was doing that job.

The Rock is renowned for his mic skills, arguably the greatest ever. He had subsequently became a Hollywood actor who memorizes lines for a living. Why on God's green earth would he need to write his lines on his wrist? Something he had never done before or after? To give Cena something to use against him, since as Stephanie had said repeatedly, the objective was to get a "Team Edward vs Team Jacob, twilight" response for the match. Giving Rock a chink in his armor for Cena to exploit was a step towards that objective.

Cena trolling was the entire point of the story. He was shown to be brash and arrogant which proved to be his undoing. It literally played into the finish when he tried to do the people's elbow and got beat for his troubles. Rock had no reason to be angry since that was exactly what the story called for. The story worked by the way to the tune of the biggest buyrate of all time. Why anyone thinks that the principal parties would treat this as anything but an unmitigated success is beyond me.

Tldr: It was all a work.

I dont think no one is saying it wasn't a success. Two things can be right you know.

Yes it was a work.

AND

Yes Cena could've still gotten under Rock's skin for real, and Rock still could've been pissed for real.

Regardless, you still dealing wit two big egos. So feelings can still be caught. Despite knowing the plan. B/c either one of them could've slightly gone off script. It happens. Ask Brett & Shawn

Bret and Shawn was a work too.

What part of Bret & Shawn was a work
The part where all of this supposed behind the scenes information about them fighting was freely mentioned on TV. Which just so happened to coincide with Vince Russos rise to head writer, the most notorious proponent for work shoots ever known.

Also the part where the biggest screw job in history was just so happened to be captured by a documentary crew. What would the documentary have even been about if not for the Screwjob?

And the part where every principle party benefitted from the screwjob and was in a better place than before it.

HBK the degenerate and chickenshit champion who screwed his biggest enemy. Bret who had spend the past year shit talking America was now the most sympathetic babyface in the world, the uncrowned champion walking into his 3 million dollar a year contract. And Vince "Mr." McMahon now in prime position to be the the top heel for Austin (who had already stunned him before), harnessing a heel act that he had perfected in Memphis.

...uhhh has any of that been confirmed tho? B/c that post reads more of a conspiracy than verified proof.

And that "Sunny Days" promo Shawn did on Raw...even Brett said that wasn't in the script. Shawn went off script and caught Brett by surprised. B/c he said they agreed not to go personal. But Shawn being Shawn did it anyway.

Bret was cheating on that bitch Julie every chance he got. Even wrote a book about it. He was just mad cause Shawn got to hit and he didn't.

And no doubt there was  some animosity between them. The kliq politicking, their divergent views of the business, both being pitted against each other, Shawn being a raging drugged out asshole, etc. But that shit was laced into their story at a time they were going all out for ratings.

Literally from the moment Bret came back they were sowing seeds for them even though initially both were babyfaces at the time. Attitude Era starts at Survivor Serier 1996 and the first chapter was the deconstruction of the new generation vis a vis the heroes break bad.

Yeah I know all that. The point I'm making is that part of it was a work, but REALITY was mixed in as well. They truly didn't like each other. That's what made their feud so good.

Just like wit Edge and Matt. They didn't like each other b/c how Lita cheated on Matt wit Edge. Hence using that for their feud.

And Owen's wife is the only one who's still on her "FUCC WWE" shyt. Bret made "peace" with them when he returned to appear on their shows.

Nah they didn't even feud like that is the point. Shawn missed most of that year being drugged out and "injured". Survivor Series was the only time they actually had televised match against each other in that whole period. Their segments were great because '97 HBK is Goated and all of his segments were great.

Conversely, Matt and Edge had real beef obviously. And that feud was HORRIBLE. Remember Matt saying that he wished Edge died in a car accident? That shit was a straight vehicle for Edge which he took full advantage of, but that feud was a miss.

And yeah Bret made peace with them now. But thats years after the fact. Had Owen never died and had Goldberg not kicked his skull in, Bret would have came back years prior and worked for Vince. The "screwjob" wasn't keeping him from no checks. His inability to wrestle and the tragic death of his brother were.

Lawd..yes rock Cena was a work but for business sake…

their animosity for one another in the beginning was real and you could see it/feel it.
