Canada has been hit by a number of romaine lettuce recalls. We set out to the U.S., where the majority of our leafy greens come from, to dig up why E. coli outbreaks continue to plague our food supply. We meet one B.C. family whose lives have been forever changed by a contaminated salad.

Romaine grows in fecal matter whereas iceberg grows in dirt and comes with its own protective shell.

It isn't that cut and dry. Iceberg gets recalls as well.

When farmers/pickers have to poop, where do you think they go?

Where the products are stored after being picked, the processing plants...the entire supply chain is absolutely filthy.

Bag/clamshell greens give a lot of people a false sense of that their lettuce/salad/veggies being "clean" because they see "prewashed" on the package and don't wash the veggies...GROSS! Rinsing isn't cleaning.

Use a solution of vinegar and cold water to clean bag and fresh lettuce/veggies...soak for 2-5 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

P.S. Remember, too, we're in a pandemic so, there are very few inspections taking place. The regularity of inspections and how they were conducted were already on the decline and kinda unreliable in the best of circumstances. Now...well, yeah. SMH

Lets also keep in mind how crazy the production chain is.

Its easy to not think about where all this shit comes from when you are in the grocery store, but when you do think about it, you realize theres fresh produce in thousands of stores daily that feed 300+ million people over a 3k mile stretch of land.

And then multiply that by every country in the world.

Really its amazing that the production chain works as good it does, and some fucked up shit like bad produce and recalls has to be expected.
