Punch of TBD: “Am I tripping or does rap sound like one long song right now??”

I think he's talking a more so that everyone legit got the same voice and cadence. Can't tell anyone a part.

10 years ago TDE blew up alongside odd future and they sounded nothing a like and neither did their group members

Future also got big then and he sounded nothing like them.

These kids nowadays can't even spit in the Cypher and that just shows how talentless the artform has gotten.

I keep in tune with new rappers and all of them do this sing songy bullshit

That's the point that I was making too. We're not talking about there being a trend and everyone jumping on it. We're talking about a wave of artists literally trying to sound just like other artists to the point that you can hear songs back to back from multiple different artists that you'd mistake for being the same dude.

If I'm wrong give me a prevalent example from the past. Bone was basically beefing with Do or Die for biting, and Do or Die ain't really sound anything like Bone.

I bet you these youngins can tell them apart though. And thats kind of the point. We the old heads now and new music all sounds the same to us. But ask youngins, and theyll be able to pick mfers apart and be like they sound nothing alike

That's true, but that doesn't change the fact there is a more systematic effort to emulate the popular sound now that has been the case in the past. I don't fault younger listeners for liking it or artists for making the music their audience likes, but we don't have to deny reality either.

The generation before said our rap was violent. Not so much about the actually rapping skills.

So the “hate” is different

These kids are all the same from voice to flow to style.

It’s ain’t the same type “hating”

Thing is when 90% of hip hop heads personalities say these artists are the same.

You got ogs from the 80s talking and debating about cole, kendrick, drake etc and that was the last generation.

When's the last time you heard rakim and them talk about this new generation.

Even the radio personalities don't like them and they've seen every generation

As far back as 15 years ago there was more variety in hip hop IMO. Granted the treads are gonna be the majority, but it wasn’t so overwhelming as it feels now. Gradually it’s been worse and worse.

just keeping it real, most of these radio personalities are old as hell though. most times, with young music, the djs were the age of the average listener. but today it would be like if the 70s djs were still on the radio in the 90s, and most of those folks weren’t seeing the musicality in hip hop

I mean ehhh

Someone like red alert would definitely appreciate kendrick and cole or maybe even Dababy

But I've even heard underground artists that sound exactly like everyone else. Can't tell them apart.

And melle Mel could appreciate a dave east aswell, being that he was on the remix.

I think it's more so that we grew up on rappers being nice on the mic, there was a bit fun here and there but mostly we just wanted to hear you rap.

I fuck with cordae, but he stands out because he's the only one actually rapping

When I was in my early 20s (mid-late 2000s) this 50'ish year old coworker said rap today (included some 90s artists) all sound the same. Dude lived in the 80s. We used to go back n forth all the time.

I remember in high school when reggaeton took off summa them guys said rap is boring bc the beat is the same in every song. I was dumbfounded by that.

I know the less entrenched I am in new shit and current artists the less I can tell em apart.

Been like this since 2006 at the latest. Just because your favorite rapper stopped dropping doesn't mean shit got worse out of nowhere.

You spot on with this. I hired a assistant that just turned 24. We were traveling recently and he "had the aux". I couldn't tell half the stuff he played apart from the last track. He knew exactly who was who. Most them dudes sounded like Lil Baby or Rod Wave.

This is a very good point! As an old head, I can agree. My step son and nephews can spot the differences quick. They be puttin me onto some new guys that fit what I like from time to time. That's how I found Jack Harlow and a few other dudes
