Saw it in imax today.

The Martian is a masterpiece so that's what I judge this film by...
Same author and same screenwriter, but Lord and Miller ain't Ridley Scott

I haven't read any reviews and only watched the 1st trailer last summer

It's ok/borderline good.

Rocky is a cool character and voice acted nicely, the visual effects and cinematography are great

The ending....man the more you think about it the more problematic it gets with the plot holes, even basic shit like..... food lol

So imma give it 2.75/4
 
My theater was packed for this so this might be doing numbers this weekend.

Let me start off with saying that the visuals in this are beautiful so props to Greig Fraser for the cinematography. I'm familiar with Daniel Pemberton's work because of Across The Spider-Verse; I loved the score in that movie and I love the score in this, it takes the movie to another level.

The humor in this landed for me. Props to Lord and Miller for their direction, always knowing when to hit the right notes. Props to Ryan Gosling's performance because he does a lot of the heavylifting in this film. Maybe I'm too bullish on this film cause I can see him get nominated for his performance in this. The bond between Grace and Rocky was the heart of the film. There's a bravery that exists in all of us and there's a capacity for us to do the right thing against the odds.

PRAISE: How do you change the usual the world is going to end if we dont get to points A & B story? By condensing but simultaneously making the story elaborate in various ways. This is not an easy feat but this movie pulls it off with charming characters, how it chooses to structure its story and its coupled with humor and strong visuals. As Ryland Grace ,Ryan Gosling displays enough physical humor, raw emotion and wit as a brilliant teacher who's mission is to save the world from an apocalyptic path. There are decisions the character could have made possibly feeling he had every right to do so and I liked how the movie plays out in a way that reveals what the character truly is inside. Within the story there are great moments that display how even the most brief and fast friendships can mean the most surpassing this alliance is just for us to complete a goal factor. There are great nods to movies and great jokes about astronaut training and space exploration. There are definitely a couple of dark turns i didn't see coming. There are some changes from the book that I didn't mind.


PROBLEMS: There are a couple of plot holes i couldn't ignore. The pacing definitely could have been better in several moments of the movie.
