Pa. man who shot at couple burglarizing his house charged with homicide: police

A Monroe County man who opened fire on a couple he said was burglarizing his house is now facing a homicide charge in the incident that left a man dead and a woman wounded, police said.

Randy Halterman, of the 2000 block of Paradise Trail in Stroud Township, was charged Wednesday with homicide, attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

The 66-year-old Halterman was sent to Monroe County Prison without bail. An attorney has not yet entered an appearance for him in the case.

Stroud Area Regional police said they were called at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Halterman’s home for a report of shots fired in the residence.

Pennsylvania Homeowner Charged With Homicide After He Fatally Shoots Intruder, Wounds Woman

STROUD, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man was charged with homicide after he fatally shot a man and wounded a woman who he said were trying to rob his house, authorities said.

Randy Halterman, 66, of Stroud Township, also faces attempted homicide and aggravated assault counts stemming from Tuesday’s shooting in the Monroe County community. He remains jailed without bail, and it wasn’t known Thursday if he had retained an attorney.

Police responded to Halterman’s home for a report of shots fired and found him there holding a handgun. He was told to put the weapon down and, after he complied, was taken to a patrol car while officers searched his home.

The officers soon found the wounded woman, who had been shot in the upper chest and abdomen, and a man who had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while she was flown to a hospital.

Halterman told police he was on the home’s second floor when he heard a noise and assumed it was an animal. But when he heard voices, he grabbed his .22-caliber handgun and pointed it in the direction from where the voices came, authorities said.

"I didn't want them to get away" might be where the homicide charge comes in.

Which is bullshit fuck them ppl.

Bitch wasn't thinking about her kid when she broke into a stranger's home.

Exactly.

No time to cop pleas now.

If she was really as concerned about her baby as she says she was, she would've never broken into the man's house to begin with.

Then again, even if she was..............that's the risk you take when you break into someone's house.

Funny how people who are predators like that always think their target is gonna be some sitting duck at their mercy.

They never expect the sitting duck to fight back.

Yup. Can't call it defense if they are fleeing.

Gotta keep ya mouth shut in these situations and lawyer up.

But he look like a maga man so shrug

Thia seems like an excessive case issue.

You're allowed to defend yourself, but your not allowed to keep shooting once the threat to you has been cleared.

There's a lot of other state with the same type of defense laws

On one hand, I KINDA get it but I'm of the mentality if you break into someone's home you get whatever they give.

Post the video cause you can't burst into someone home and be fleeing at the same time.

Now if they burst through the door and she started shooting and then they started fleeing after the first shots. That is a totally different situation than the one this thread is about.

Seems like these people started fleeing as soon as they realized someone was home and he started firing regardless of them fleeing. I understand why he still shot even though they were fleeing.

Him still shooting is wrong to the law but to most of the public they would probably do the same thing. A good lawyer who can pick 1 or 2 jurors to see it his way could get him a deadlocked jury.

It depends on the state (and other factors).

There was this case a while back in TX where this honky murdered two guys in broad daylight for robbing his neighbor's house. Dude called 911 and then went out with his shotgun and just murdered them even after 911 said they had cops on the way and to stay in his house.

He was white and they were illegal immigrants so it didn't even go to trial.

That's some whole other shit you talking about with that TX case .

I know certain things vary by state. What doesn't vary is if the person or people are still coming in the house you can shoot at them regardless of state. What varies by state is what you can and can't do once they start fleeing.

Shit in some states if you get into a fist fight with someone who broke into your home. Once the homeowner gets the upper hand you're not supposed to keep beating up the intruder. At that point if the homeowner goes too far they have now committed assault against the person who broke in their home.
